question about buying "as is"

Hello. I hope this is the right section for my question. I wanted to know, are "as is" car purchases exempt from e-test and certification requirements? What is required before ownership can be transfered? Thanks.

And if I've misplaced this post, please redirect it. I won't be offended :-D

yes, you may drive an unregistered car IF: you have yellow dealer's plates, or if you pay for a 10 day temporary permit.

with a 10 day temporary permit, the car needs to be at least certified, but it does not need to be e-tested. the ownership must be in your name though. you get a little paper licence plate that you glue to your window.

to get proper plates, you need the ownership in your name, certification, and e-test

I actually got my first EF 10 day permit without safety or emissions. All they wanted was an insurance policy # which you will need for sure because you can't drive around in an uninsured car for 10 days.

yes, you need insurance, but the title of the car also has to say "FIT" on it, which means it passed safety
they wont give you a 10 day permit without the car being fit

That's right. The vehicle must be deemed as fit to get a trip permit. Buying a car as is usually means it needs more work than what it's actually worth. That is not always the case, though. Sounds like you don't know much about buying cars, so I would recommend buying one safetied and e-tested. Then, as a precaution, if you want, take it to another shop to get the safety checked, so that you know it wasn't a hot safety or something.

I know they're not supposed to give it to you without the safety but they did for me. I was like listen...I'm not gonna pay to tow the f'n thing everywhere to get it saftied!

haha... sometimes they make mistakes when you confuse them... i bought my first car (i had no experience at all...) well i went to transfer the ownership along with that seller... he has no experience selling cars either... well... the lady ask him was it fitted or not, he said, he didn't understand, so she asked "was it driven or towed around?", then he said driven... then they lady say, then its fitted... and then the lady ask me if i bought insurance yet, and if i did, i can get a temp plate.... hahaha... the next time i went back to get my plate with emission and safety papers... another lady ask me... your car's fitted, how come you're bringing me a safety document? hahaha... i would've just save the $$$ (but of course, safetying a car guarantees my own safety as well as others....)

anyways... as is only means a car is sell in the condition it is (the condition you see with your own eyes).... any cars to get plate and legal on the road must be safetied and emission...
