I do the engine bay of my car twice a year. I use this Motomaster foaming engine cleaner stuff from Crappy Tire. You spray it on, it foams up for 15 minutes or so, then you just rinse it off. If I'm not feeling too lazy, sometimes I'll cover up the distributor, but that's it. Everything gets wet when it rains and in the winter anyway, so I don't see the point of covering everything up. Unless you hold the hose directly on the distributor I'm sure there won't be any problems. My car always runs fine afterwords.
