Datsun 240Z.
actually this shows who the real fanboy is. based on technological or performance comparisons, the 240Z has nothing on the NSX. the NSX is the quintessential japanese exotic automobile. note... I didn't say supercar... as it's not a supercar. it's an exotic built for one purpose alone, pure driving pleasure. the car looks, drives, and behaves like pure ecstacy wrapped in aluminium.

there are many many uber cool cars, the AE86 being one of them. it is the classic romance story of the underdog. the flat chested chick at the prom if you will... it takes a real connoisseur of automobiles to appreciate the underdog, to see the inner beauty under the bland exterior. and yes... it makes the top 10 cool japanese cars in my book... and yes, it is the car most likely on that list that a working man could afford. that's what makes this romance story so appealing... it's a reachable dream.

there are many cool cars that make the budget dream car list:

Mazda Miata MX5 is one that hasn't come up
Nissan 240SX/180SX (S13)
Toyota MR2 supercharged
Toyota MR2 turbocharged
Nissan 300ZX TT
Mazda RX7 (Mk2)

all these cars are both affordable, super cool, and have good aftermarket support.

The Mk1 MR2 for example is a super under-rated sports car cuz it's so quirky looking.

I would love to have the turbocharged MR2...one day.

Couple of my friends and I all went in on an 87 mr2 supercharged for $1000. has about 200k on it and it still runs like a dream.

The S/C belt slips a bit and it's got one rust spot over the passenger rear fender but other than that she's a bute!

We've got an aftermarket S/C pulley and new belt on the way, We're in the process of installing a mega-squirt stand alone system with EDIS ignitions system, It's gonna be twin charged down the road (yes S/C and turbo). and we have a set of formula atlantic cams waiting to go in, good for 11,000rpms.

She's a work in progress and she's gonna be the number 1 autocross car in the twinlakes auto club in a few years.

We've already upgraded the wheels and tires, new brakes, and a little bit of weight reduction, and it's already a force to watch out for on the cone track!

What a great car it is. It's straight piped and spits fire out the rear all the time. LOL.

Here's a link to a video I put together of our little mr2.

mr2 vid

(the first 20 seconds is a bit of a slide show, after that it gets into the action....enjoy.)

I've always thought it was 280hp stock..?

Anyway, mine would be the HKS full carbon EVO.

yeah I think your right. The bone stock R34 GT-R came with 280hp. It's the z-tuned GT-R R34 that comes with 400+hp.

The miata is a good sports car but it's not worthy to make it on my list.
