About the "Check Digit". As far as I know, there is no specific meaning to it. I think it is just something the factory uses to keep track of cars. I have seen numbers and letters used as check digits.

This could also be used to verify an actual VIN. If someone understands how to decode VIN and were to make one up, the check digit would not necessarily be correct. Only Honda would be able to verify this. Does this make sense?

Also, the decode list is a little dated. Here's some additional info.

For model year:

X = 99
Y = 00
1 = 01
2 = 02
3 = 03

For Civic Model codes:
EM1 = 99-00 Civic SiR (U.S. Si)
ES1 = 01 - Civic Sedan
EM2 = 01 - Civic Coupe
EP3 = '02 - Civic SiR (Country code is S - U.K. Swindon factory) ... This is for Buff's information
ES9 = '03 - Civic Hybrid (the gas/electric type)
