Question E-testing and certifying my new car

Hey Guys,

I just got myself a 93 civic coupe with a JDM swap done on it. My question regarding emissions is how does it get done? The JDM obviously puts out more hp/emissions then the stock DX that was in it previous. Also, for the safety, everything is alright on the car except for the windshield, it has a crack top to bottom on the passenger side. The crack is about 6" away from the passenger side piller and does not obstruct the drivers view at all, but I want to see what my options are before I replace the windshield.

Thanks.

MAtt

plus brakes-pads and rotors, lights, wipers, ball joints, condition of body holes need to be fixed, etc. but you said its fine so...

e-test...they'll test it like a "Hot-Rod" class if its from a newer car...its illegal to swap a older motor into your car...

someone will give some more detail on this...

Thanks for the replies so far. I decided to just get a new windshield installed to save myself the hassel of trying to find someone to overlook the crack. As for the emissions, I need to get a letter from Honda stating that the engine was not available that model year to get the car tested as a "hot rod", correct?

Why not just get it e-tested and see if it pass?

I passed a e-test with flying colours with my ZC in my 90 HB.

Ya, I probably will. The guy I got that car off of said that he got it tested before I got it and it failed. I figured it failed becuase of the difference in engines, but wasn't really sure. I am trying to get him to find the emissions printout so I can see what parts failed.

Matt

PS-got my windshield installed today

No, you do not need a letter from Honda as far as I know. My old Civic has a ZC and they tested it under Hot Rod. Just make sure you tell them its a different engine, because they may not notice.

If they don't believe me that it's a different engine, I will have them try and read the chinese writing on the timing cover and see if that helps convince them of the JDM power

my jdm b16 failed. It passed HC and CO ok but was like 5 times the limit on NO. I don't think that you can get it tested as a "hot rod" b/c a 1.6 litre came in a civic from the factory. The engine has to be of larger displacement than any eninge offered in any model of that year car. And since a 1.6L was offered in the SI they won't test it as a hot rod.....trust me, i tried.
Test it and see how it goes.

I know it's only $40 for a test, so I might as well run it and see what the results are, then from there figure out what needs to be fixed/looked at.

zeeman-what did you have to change to get yours to finally pass?

tail pipe size won't change your emmissions.

Ultra 94 may help
Stock cat. Can't hurt for trying.

I would change the sparkplugs if they haven't been changed already. Also I would check the PCV valve just incase.

I have a JDM b16A2 swapped in a 6th Gen 4 Door. I passed my emmissions with flying colours except for my HC which was close to the limit. So yes it is possible to Pass with a swap. Plus I have an Intake, and full exhaust. I suggest you change plugs, wires, etc. Before I went I pumped in 94 Octane Sunoco gas, changed my oil, and plugs, new distributor cap and rotor, new fuel filter. My injectors were changed too (but not for emissions reasons) I am sure all of this stuff will help pass the test

Well, the car got through safety without any major issues, just had to replace the rear brake pads and machine the drums. I have a temp plate on it right now and I am going to get a emissions test when I get back from work next week. I will post the results and hopefully we can figure out the problem.

Oh ya, one thing I was going to ask.........on my intake, there is a spot for a hose to attach to it. I am 98% sure this hose is suppose to run across and plug into the valve cover, is this right? Cause right now, the hose coming out of the cover is plugged and doesn't attach to the intake.
