Question Cars from the U.S.A

I was wondering generally what the cost to bring a car from the U.S. to Canada would be in terms getting it across the border... i.e. brokerage fees etc... has ne one shipped over the border??

You will get charged duty, on the bluebook value of the car. Then I'm not sure, but I believe you may also have to get an emission test too. If the car is old and you are getting a good deal, then it’s worth it, but otherwise for a new car, not worth it at all. You can always call the Ministry of Transportation for the best and most correct answer.

Cheers

Not to mention if the car doesn't meet saftey requirements for Canada, then you'd have to make it pas those.....ie......alot of cars from the US, don't have daytime running lights.....you'd have to install those.

That's just ones of the things I remembered.

PM bbarbulo, he can let you know what's involved.

My gf's dad sold his old Jag Soverign to his brother from NJ when he was over in the summer for $5500 US. He said at the border he was roughly taxed $800US. Thats almost 15% of the car's selling price...mind you crossing the border from the U.S. with purchased car may be more or less...im not to sure, but this is how much he payed when going back into the states with a purchased used car from Canada.

For older cars (1990) back it seems not too bad to bring cars over... especially from states that don't have winters... no rust

cars are disposable to these ppl in the states, a LOT of them are beat up, and the heat does put a lot of stress on all the components... those ******* run their A/C 24-7. If you think garages here do shoddy work, wait till you see the kind of butchering US shops can do.

Don't know about that 'cause I tried to bring my old '88 Mitsubishi to Canada back in '96 and after paying duty and taxes I was told that the car could not be registered unless I would replace the bumpers 'cause they did not meet Canadian safety standards. Unfortunately no car in Canada had those bumbers so even if I wanted to change the bumpers (which I did not at that point) I couldn't get them anywhere. Bottom line ... I had to sell the car back in the States.

^^^ That sucks... there is a list of 'importable' cars that you need to look at before taking a leap like that.

The funny thing is that the car was on that list. They said that the car can be imported but it needs to have DRL installed and the bumpers changed. Only after I brought the car to Canada I found out that one could not buy anywhere those stupid bumpers for that car.
