If the car was being sold retail, there are certain liability and process that a dealer selling the car would undertake. Example such as the exhaust falling off a week after purchase, as well as disclosure about the car.
Second of all, you asked in this thread "how to sell" your car, and even stated that you were prepared to drop your price substantially. You car was over priced before and dropping it to an average price isn't going to lure buyers in.
Maybe you don't understand, but i think its more of a case you don't like my advice, but I don't think you will get $7500 for an automatic 7 year old civic with 185,000 kms on it.
You're welcome to try, these are just my thoughts.

jooksingkid: thanks for the reply. i know what you mean...its just a bitter pill to swallow. i honestly appreciate the advice and will follow it.
torrey: i can get that...all i need to do is strip most the mods and call up a broker.

true....but those are asking prices. im not going to list the car for the lowest price i would let it go for because everyone will try to bargain it even lower.
i would list it as $7500 w/ rims....and would accept a lower offer of course (as long as its reasonable).

thanks surfofpink.....but if im asking a low price, i cannot put OBO or someone will offer even lower than im willing to go.
you are right on the playing games forever though...i want to sell this car ASAP!!!!
im going to list it in the new year (didnt have time to go the last few days)....i want to get atleast $6500 w/o rims. i know i can sell the rims no problem for $800-900.

my theory is... you can only earn 1/5 to 1/4 more of the price the trade-in offers you OR you won't make more than 1/4 of what the dealer would make on top of the trade-in value
what i'm saying is... if the dealer offer you a trade-in value of 4500, i'm sure you would be thinking the dealer is gonna sell your car out for 10000+ but that is not true! at that mileage, no car can go beyond 8000 even if its priced by a dealer or used car dealer.
suppose your car is gonna be listed by dealer X at 8500, then its probably gonna be sold at 8000... so the dealer makes 3500... now, if you don't trade in and instead you sell it on your own, don't expect to make 3500, you can only make like 1/4 of that which is roughly less than 1000... and so you should be looking at something like 4500-5500 to be reasonable!
first all, you're less expose to the market, so you can't capture as much attention as dealers and dealers give non-car enthusiasts more confident because they are a dealer... not everyone knows about cars, for someone who dunno much about cars always prefer a dealer-sold vehicle...
if you think you can make a lot more than the trade-in value, then you're wrong... in fact, you mentioned that you know people would still bargain if its posted at a low price, you're wrong again... i believe if your price is RIGHT, i don't think people can actually bargain much off you... suppose you post the car at 5500-6000 obo... if someone give you like 4000 (that's obviously lowballing)... maybe 5000, you can let it go, or maybe you can get 5500 straight coz that's a good price!
if that person still tries to bargain when its at the right price, you know that person is not a buyer but a loser! just my 2cents and some simple theory

thanks bro....i know you are right. so by your math, the dealer was willing to give me $4500 + the taxes on the trade-in. thats $5175. by your calculations, i can only "mark-up" my price by 20-25%....so thats $6200-6500.
i was planning on listing it for $7199 OBO w/ rims.
any opinions?

if your trying to get around 7200 dollars for it, i would switch everything back to stock or else the buyer might think you drove the sh>t out of it and there could be unknown damage done to the engine..... I know i would never buy a car with mods done to it.

civicdx....my car is automatic. i have and intake and exhaust and its lowered...i dont think thats too crazy. i was more into stereos when i was younger, but took it out a few years back (to install the rear illuminas and rear strut bar).
but i know what you mean...i wouldnt buy a totally done up car either. i would however get one with the basics if i was looking for that (ie I/H/E, suspension, etc.).
