Question DOT 5.1 brake fluid

Hi guys,

Been lurking around for a bit now. Finally decided to post my first post here; looking for some help.

I'm thinking of installing a SS brake line on my 07 SI and figured I might as well upgrade the brake fluid too, since the stock stuff will have to be bled out.
I was looking to put in some Motul DOT 4 brake fluid but it seems like all the places no longer carry DOT 4; they only have DOT 5.1.

I know the manual says DOT 3 and 4 are OK but DOT 5 is not (since this is silicon based) but there's no mention of DOT 5.1

Anyone use DOT 5.1 for street use?

Thanks in advance.

5.1 is fine. Its polyethylene based, just like DOT 3 and 4.

He's right, it is fine.

But may I ask why the upgrade? Do you track it?

I haven't tracked it yet. But I'm thinking about doing it one day.

I'm putting in a stainless steel brake line and figured I might as well upgrade the brake fluid too since the stock stuff will have to be bled out.

i can't honestly think of a good reason for SS brake lines. the hype regarding how they don't allow for swelling is really overdone. stock lines don't swell given the pressure generated by the master cylinder. i might recommend an agressive compound pad like something from Hawk or KVR if you are looking for improved braking, but that will affect rotor life and brake dust and noise levels.

Well, I don't know if I would've gotten one myself but I got it as a bday gift from a friend so I figure I'd put it to use rather than throwing it in some corner

But thanks for the input.
I do intend on upgrading the pads in the spring.
