Anyone else have this problem?

1992 Civic Si HB.

NOn-ABS brakes.

Rear disc started to scream like something was scraping against the rotor. I thought it was that little plate that goes between the pad the the housing.

Turns out it wasn't. That spacer between the pads and the caliper, you know the one that "pushes" the pads towards the center of rotor and seated properly?(Gosh I hope the makes sense)

For some reason that is scraping agains the rotor's edge (horrible noise).

My question, how neccessary is that spacer piece? Can I just take it out and forget about it? Or should I try to bend it in such I way that it doesn't rub against the disc now? I fear if I just bend it, it will eventually scrap again.

Anyone know what the hell I'm talking about??? lol.

No it's not a wear indicator.

It's to hold the pad in place with some pressure.

okay just so I don't sound like a vague idiot.

it's part number 22465 I'm talking about. Officially called "SPRING, PAD"

check out this picture.

http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/...AKE+%28DISK%29

It's part number 15 in the picture. Do I really need this part? I don't think my 97 del sol has that on the back rotors.

it's essential if you don't like warped rotors. very cheap from the dealership, go pick some up and replace all 4 for each caliper. it's just good maintenance....

believe it or not, that little spring clip ensures the pad doesn't ride the rotor all the time. some cars don't have them, for example Golfs and Neons, but they use inferior methods of returning the pad to 'resting' position.

i've had the same thing happen to me, and yes if you bend it, it'll just go back and make the noise again. replace all four and you should be good
