Question Shifter replacement

Currently have a short shifter that's really old and has served me well. In the past while it started to feel loose/sloppy so I thought it was those bushings you can get from energy suspension. Turns out that's not the problem. It's the bushing/bearing at the base of the shifter (pic)

Now I'm wondering can I get a bushing to replace it or do I need a whole new shifter? If I do need either one, does the centre console need to be removed or can this all be done from underneath the car?

TIA

you could shim in washers to tighten it up. but i dont think its the actual shifter that feels loose. its probably that rear bushing that has worn out. energy suspension sells a kit for $10. IMO i rather peplace the bushing first rather than spend money on a $100 shifter or you could do both if you have the money. as for the installion it will be easier if you remove the center console because theres 12mm (i think) bolts that tend to spin when your removing the rear shifter bushing nuts. but other than that its a pretty straight forward install. everything else is pretty much under the car.

i just installed 2 shifters last week that where bought off ebay for 20buck each with new bearing and hardware. they should last about 2yrs but for 20$ who cares! 4screws on console(back two are ruff to remove leave them in and just lift up on console to make room) unbolt the shifter bolt (14mm) then remove to nuts that holds every thing together if rusted try snaping the bolts or you will have to dremell tool the heads off inside car then throw all that crap out and reinstall with new everything Takes about 30mins to 1hour depending on your skill level and tools

oh ya think it was 10mm for the 2nuts but if you have a buddy help than use Vise grips to stop the spining heads! Cheers GetRdone

Thanks for the info guys.

The ES bushings have already been done a few months back so I know it aint them. Plus when I go to get my oil changed I went underneath and wiggled the shifter from below and it definitely is loose.

Where can I get all the new harware for the install and what are the specs (the mentioned rusted bolt and the washer shims)?

Well mine were rusted too and i re-used them and they came out no problem, just use a lot of penetrating fluid. just be easy with them. as for the bolts and washer i can get them from work but i guess if you find out the thread pitch and size you could go to any hardware store.

Thanks.

ya kinda near Rice L. 10mins south. 50min east of tdot. im in TO sometimes but not for long periods because im not a city person and cant handle the traffic n all the crowds. Well back to the shifter, i got a shifter of ebay $20 ruffly came with the one longer bolt and i supplyed the other two that will probly snap off yours are rusted bad i can see in the pic! A B&Mshifter will cost about 100 to 150 but they dont come with the bearing they want you to use the stock one(pretty stupid if you ask me) that would be like reuseing your rusted old bolts(pointless) i would buy a new short shifter off ebay and 2 1inch bolts with 10mm locking nuts and save the headake for another project! email addy is throttlesteve@hotmail.com

see where that red curcule(bad spelling went to PH high school lol) thats the one nut that i see its no good! the other nut is under the linkage rod itll be no good either the one longer bolt that runs threw the end of the shifter can be reused but i say replace it too, the shifter i replaced in my buddys civic had lotsa slop to because the bearing was so far gone that it wasnt even there any more thats why i say go with all new stuff!

Thanks man. Will definitely check that out.
So 2 x 1" long stainless steel bolts with a 10mm thread that will accept 10mm locking nut correct? Is nylon locking nuts OK? What should the diameter of the bolt be?

And about that ES bushing set above. I thought that was the problem too. Installed that and realized it was actually the shifter bearing

i was told the 25$****ers off ebay will last about 2yrs, i cant picture it snaping there actualy well built if anything may wear out would be the bearing but this seems to be a common problem with any shifter thats why there are so many replacement parts! im just saying 25$ is a good deal and for $30 you may find a boot&**** included, Save some$$$ And yes thos nuts&bolts will work fine. there probly worth 50cents each at the most thats why i say dont reuse! while building my hotrod EVERY nut&bolt gets replaced with NEW for a few cents each why not?? well thats my 2cents for the day lol Take care comb your hair! Yah I might just pick up a Skunk2 cuz it's made outta steel not aluminum. But then again I'd go for any brand as long as it's made outta steel. Heard that the aluminum ones snap.

Or maybe I should put my stock one back in to save $$???
