Question Anyone getting the 10% discount?

Does anyone else qualify for that 10% discount that some insurance companies are offering to combat the increased rates? I get it next year when I renew.

Yeah, you apparently get it when you renew, or start a new policy. At least that's the way it was explained to me, and there was an article in the paper too. But, it's only certain insurance companies.

I was watching cp24 last night, They were talking about auto insurance, someone said that the insurance company knows about the 10% a few months early so they upped your insurance by 10-20% so when the 10% discount came into effect, it #$%^ your rate.

A company cannot increase rates without government approval, so if the government institutes a 10% discount in rates, why would they allow companies to raise them by 10%?

That's the problem no one knows. There are a lot of anomalies in the auto insurance market.

like 3 of the callers last night said their insurance doubled when they renew. No accident, ticket, etc.. same company, same car...

No one knows because it doesn't happen .... The reason their insurance doubled as because the company their insured with lost too much money in the auto sector last year so they were approved to increase rates .... Problem solved.

The guy from the parliament something, looks like he was choking when he was answering the question

"No one knows because it doesn't happen .... The reason their insurance doubled as because the company their insured with lost too much money in the auto sector last year so they were approved to increase rates .... Problem solved."

Isnt that the broker or governments problem, you stayed clean, you follow the rules, you dont have any accident.. i mean if they lost money, how come the consumer have to suffer from it? I know they lost around 500-550 million last year, but its not the clean drivers fault right.

If you think about it, we pay way too much on gas tax, taxes on products we buy*gst and pst*, property taxes, 5 times more in auto insurance compared to other *i think its BC* province in canada. What do we get from it? OHIP? what else? look at our roads, they squeezed a lot of money from taxes and we have to spend more fixing the suspension on our car because of the thousands of potholes in the gta. "If you are whining about how high the insurance is, why drive? you can always take the bus?" well I would take the bus if the bus is on schedule. I dont blame the TTC, coz they arent "funded" I blame the government who wants to increase the insurance rates coz the insurance company lost money... Sometimes I wonder where the money goes...

Maybe a diplomatic trip in the caribbean....

everyone CAN know because its listed on the internet for everyone to see. FSCO controls all financial institutions in ontario including banks and insurance companies. THEY are the ones who approve the rates the insurance companies charge. This link shows what rate increases or decreases have just been approved.

http://www.fsco.ca/FSCO_UW_MainEngin...1?opendocument

Keep in mind this 10% decrease the media keeps talking about is a goal or an average, it does not mean all companies will have this decrease or that it applies across the board to everyone or all coverages.

Insurance is the assessment of risk. The premiums of everyone covers the accidents of those who make a claim. The cost of paying for a claim has gone up, so, premiums do as well, its not profit, its the cost of doing business. BC does have government insurance, they also have regulations on Accident Benefit and tort claims Ontario doesn't, thus less fraud and less payments made to those who are not really injured. Oh, by the way, have you seen how much BC pays in taxes to fund their government run insurance?

Its something your going to have to deal with if you own and drive in Ontario. I don't defend it, I just want to explain it. And I'm not sure what you man when you say "its" not higher? Whats its? Taxes? Insurance?

Insurance and taxes *different kind of taxes*

That is why there are a lot people pissed. Insurance is a scam, a legal scam When we do it, it is called "stealing" when the government/insurance company do it, it is called "insurance rates"

Well, I beg to differ as far as it being a scam. Tell that to the people who are invloved in accidents and are no longer able to work, and their insurance company provides them with enough money to take care of themselves and their families. Its a scam to you, because all you do is pay your premiums, and get a little pink slip. You don't see it at work.

You posted something before, saying that they increased the rate because they lost money, THAT IS A SCAM, BUSINESS IS ALL ABOUT RISK, if you are in a business and you don't risk anything, then that is NOT business.

"AFAIK the BC insurance was making a profit for the government..."

BC insurance is really low compared to ours too.

Actually your wrong. Look at any statement of a insurance company who sells auto insurance in Ontario. Not one will have a profit in this sector, not one. The term will actually be defined as an Underwriting loss. Business is all about risk? Of course it is, but Insurance is the only business that makes risk their business, in other words, there whole existence is based on the assessment of risk.

BC Insurance is low because taxes are high. Its a tradeoff. You choose.

BC Insurance makes a profit for the government. Ontario insurers attempt to make a profit, the only difference is theirs is made on investments.
