Photo Challenge Discussion Thread

So here we have a thread to discuss all you want about our monthly photo contests. Ideas, suggestions, tips, chit chat....whining about the rules etc. If you have any concern or questions, let this thread be your sounding board.

One point i would like to make is that if you are not participating in the contests at all, there isnt much point in complaining about anything. I cant hear you if you are outside of the room.

Discuss....

szuberi 01-Apr-2008 08:53 AM

one idea i had in mind was to make the monthly winner pick and choose top three photos submitted from next month's contest and then put them up for voting...so you only vote for three top picks by last month's winner.

szuberi 09-Apr-2008 02:52 PM

why everyone is in sleeper mode. we just have two submissions so far.......turns out the crowd is shy here....or something else is up? send me themmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm photos

No, I rather see the entire entries. Doesn't make sense just voting for 3 submissions. Look at it this way. What if the winner also submit his in the following contest, so he picks his to be the top 3 and pick 2 other "not as worthy" entries to go up against his. Does that make sense?

szuberi 09-Apr-2008 05:01 PM

all entries can be posted for everyone to see....but the past winner will pick up the best three of his/her choice for voting. it works....here is an example on 8th civic and plz vote for me....haha

xray 09-Apr-2008 05:43 PM

So, you're saying everbody gets to vote for all the entries, but the past winner will pick the 3 entries that he/she likes the best? I dunno, I'm still lost. Then what's the sense of voting in the first place? Why not just get to picking the 3?

szuberi 15-Apr-2008 02:04 PM

two submissions so far.......hellooooooo.........need more......where are all the photographers.

xray 17-Apr-2008 12:11 AM

My creativeness is not kicking in.

LEITNER 17-Apr-2008 05:35 AM

was the topic too difficult? i thought it was cool but now.... not so much. it is requiring a lot of thought for me personally. i wanted it to have anything to do with time...a moment in time, time of day or year, time of your life, etc. sorry to have picked a subject that didnt do anything.

xray 17-Apr-2008 09:22 AM

It's not too bad. Just a thought provoking subject. Mine hasn't been clicking yet.

username 17-Apr-2008 09:26 AM

il be shooting some today..
1st try on this competition thingie.
haha!!

xocherryox 17-Apr-2008 11:37 AM

I honestly find it a bit of an inconvenience to send the pictures in for them to be looked at then posted. I would much rather just post it up like previous months. And yes I realize I do not actively participate in the photo contests but I have my reasons. But some of the time I am the one submitting Mike's photos for him while he is at work.

szuberi 17-Apr-2008 11:45 AM

cerise...if you can please explain to me what is the inconvenience in sending the photo for the contest? you would do it otherwise in an outside competition dont you think.

xray 17-Apr-2008 12:15 PM

I guess we'll let the facts speak to see if we lose interest of people by having to submit their photos. Me, I don't mind.

szuberi 17-Apr-2008 12:29 PM

those who think they dont wanna participate just cuz they have to submit their photo to someone may not participate then. i mean....i wanna know too what is the issue? time can not be the issue...cuz it takes a second to send the link through PM. to me, its more exciting to wait and see whats up for competition.

xray 17-Apr-2008 11:38 PM

I rather do it the way you have set up, but I think the majority of the ppl want to see it set up the old way. I guess it's the "if it ain't broke, why fix it?" so to speak.

xocherryox 19-Apr-2008 10:50 AM

I just don't see the point in the photo needing to be sent to someone first. It was fine the way it was. I don't see the reason behind all the sudden changes in the competition and it seems with the new rules that the participation rate has diminished. If the changes are making for worse participation, why keep the changes? Just my opinion.

And I find that if someone does not fully understand the topic or not have any inspiration for the topic that seeing other entries does help which in turn also increasing the participation.

It basically comes down to the point that I don't really see the need for all the changes.

szuberi 20-Apr-2008 10:18 AM

^^ you still havent answered my question as to why and you are basically repeating what you said earlier. as u said...so it basically comes down to the point that you dont see the need how?

if you had read my earlier posts, i explained clearly that this was done to keep the element of surprise and more importantly, to make the entries competitive and creative (since you wont be looking at other submissions in advance, it will be totally left to your own imagination/research to come up with an idea to shoot the subject)

to your other point, if someone doesnt understand the topic or is struggling with coming up with an idea, there are lots of resources available online to come up with an idea rather than waiting to see what other people are shooting...thats a bit less creative dont u think.

lastly, the submission rate did not diminish just due to these new rules. we hardly have 4-5 regulars in the area to begin with and lately, even less. dont remember if you or mike have participated here ever? or have you? my effort was to improve upon our monthly photo contests but it seems majority of the folks dont like the changes that were put in place. maybe people are just shy to send their photos...lol or dont feel confident enough. i wish somebody could explain though but i guess im right.

lets do one more month and lets strip the new rule and go back.

the new rule was no fix if you think about it. it was an attempt to improve upon the submissions.

maybe im trying to hard...hahaha :shooter:

xray 20-Apr-2008 02:19 PM

I'd say leave it the way you have it, Sal. Let's see what becomes of it. It could be the difficulty of creative thinking from your avarage joe to come up with the subject of time that you have so very little interest this go around. Maybe the winner of this month should come up with an easier topic like animals or cars lol.

Cynikal.Mindset 20-Apr-2008 09:16 PM

I wouldnt say "better things" than shoot...perhaps "other" things to do...cuz heck, I'd rather take pictures than do the other crap I have to do

I thought it was a fantastic idea when I read what the topic was for May. Great possibility. It's not a limiting topic, in the least.

A very good idea, trance, and am looking forward to what you have in store, along with Sal and Marty, Matty, xray, Cerise, Kev and the others. :)

now we can all do a better job knowing you approve...nice colour, did you do that on purpose?

xray 04-May-2008 12:48 PM

It'll be interesting. Since it rained the last few days, the grass is a little greener lol. I have a few ideas already.

szuberi 05-May-2008 07:32 AM

^^ easy enough for you now xray? lol :-)

xray 05-May-2008 10:54 AM

LOL! I have a few shots already!!! Like pie, Sal.

xocherryox 06-May-2008 09:45 AM

OK I have one quick question -- I just might get myself out there and take some shots, this is my kind of topic - But I have a ****ty cam - I can take decent quality shots, but not as good as some of the Nikons around here -- How much does the quality affect peoples votes? Like obviously if it is fuzzy, out of focus etc it is not worth it - But there are people who can tell by looking at the picture that it was taken with a lesser ISO, shutter speed, a non macro lens, or no lens on etc ... Will I be ok with my regular digital or should I steal Mike's camera for a day ?

xray 06-May-2008 10:12 AM

I don't see why not. I entered a few contests on here before when I was shooting with my point and shoot digital camera and still got votes for it. Just be creative!

xocherryox 06-May-2008 10:14 AM

Ha ha don't edit in that 'canon' nonsense

xray 06-May-2008 10:31 AM

But Sal and I would agree...

LEITNER 06-May-2008 10:50 AM

i always try to be creative with the topic and worry about how to get it after....camera shouldnt get in the way of creativity or a good shot.
