So I got a volvo **Pics added**
86 740 turbo sedan.
got it for free from my wife's cousin, saved it from going to the wreckers. It's awsome, I love it. Always wanted one. In pretty good condition, 227,000km's, engine runs strong, body is pretty good, needs a little tlc. Just thought I'd share. |
pics mike, gotta see it!

worthless without pics

She'll leave a nice patch and cloud of smoke all the way through 2nd gear...haha. pics coming soon... |
nicee.. lets see some pics!
|
haha awesome that was my first car. i bought it when i was sisxtenen. It was pretty quick for an 86. That car has solid reliability.
|
So today, tried to take off the fuel filter to clean it or see if it needs replacement. The banjo bolt on the one end would not come undone so I put it back together and I must have damaged the filter casing cause now it sprays a mist of fuel from that end of the filter while the engine is running...now it really does need replacing...lol. Also found out it needs a rear main seal on the tranny.
Installed an external bov I had from my turbo cavalier, also installed a fuel pressure gauge. the bov sounds nice...hehe. Gives off a nice PSSSSSsssss. Tomorrow, new fuel filter and fuel pump relay and also picking up a Chilton's repair manual. Those books are awesome. |
Awesome!
We need pics! |
just jam the wastegate closed and see how much balls it really has

LOL It does have a very weak waste gate spring. I have a manual boost controller to put in it but I want to get it running properly before I go raising the boost. |
Ugh....
Got the new fuel filter installed. Now I need a new rad. The one fitting near the top right side snapped right off. Was all rotted. Going to standard autowreckers tomorrow for a fuel pump relay and rad. Guess there's a reason it was free...lol. But I'll get her purring again. Half the fun of a project car is fixing it up. |
Still no pics
|
Ok, I'll post up a couple pics tomorrow.
So I went to standard auto wreckers, got a rad. The original was plastic tanks and the new one I put in was brass tanks, and has a slightly larger capacity (better cooling ftw!!!). Put the rad in, took her for a little run. She ran strong today. And the bov is anything but quiet! hehe...except now I think it just ran out of gas...lol. Either that or the in-tank fuel pump quit working.... The project continues... |

^^haha! Awsome.
Have you seen the volvo big-rig trucks? Best looking trucks on the road. |
Ok, here are the pics:

Removed the air box today, made a mounting bracket and put on a high flow cone filter. Also installed an external bov and removed the factory recirculating bov. Also installed a fuel pressure gauge inline right before the fuel rail. And last but not least, the guage cluster: (I love the boost gauge with no numbers...lol. A proper boost gauge is next on the list.) http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j1...r/100_2724.jpg |
That's not too shabby for a freebie.
|
Today: Installed a proper boost gauge (one with actual numbers on it...lol), also installed a manual boost controller (in the car, beside the center console) for extra boost on the fly! It works well too, had her up to 10psi and you can actually hear it bleeding the boosted air out in the car...hehe.
Turbos are the best invention ever! Even better than sliced bread! Fuel pump relay came into day but didn't have time to try it. Have to try it tonight. |
get a huge fmic and mount it in front of the bumper...keep it haggard!
|
Put the new fuel pump relay in. Took her for a spin, she doesn't stall anymore. But she still bucks, hiccups, and cuts out while in boost. If not in boost, it runs fine. Also while it's cutting out I can here the fuel pump relay clicking on and off too. So something is telling it to shut off the pump or there's a wire somewhere thats shorting but only while in boost. (This mostly happens at half to full boost pressures).
Yeah it definitely needs a better fmic. The factory unit looks quite restrictive. |
Those fuel pump relays on the car are notorious for going bad. I had to replace mine 2 times in one year.
|
Oh the fun never ends...
Now it blew a coolant hose off just under the intake manifold where it goes into the heater core....was spewing coolant all over. Thought she blew a head gasket at first. Meh, easy fix. |
BTW, how much are you dropping for insurance for that beast?
|
I'm enjoying reading this on-going saga, it's great. Sweet that you picked it up for free.

Coolant hose fixed. It didn't blow the hose off, it split it wide open.
Looking like the in-tank unit (sending unit) will need to be replaced. Oh I don't want to know how much that will cost....:faint2: I believe the in tank pump is working again, but I can squeeze the fuel line where it's pumping it out and I can feel air bubbles going through which means air is getting into the fuel line from inside the fuel tank, and this is probably whats causing the cutting out under hard acceleration. The engine is simply not getting enough fuel. Plus it doesn't help when it keeps getting low on fuel....lol. |
haha Volvos are built to last, Swedish honda ;)
|
sweet man, sounds like a fun project. good luck
|
The adventure continues...
The long vacuum lines necessary to mount the manual boost controller inside the car is causing dangerously high boost spikes when it first builds boost. Up around 12-15psi. And the motor really doesn't like it...lol. So the boost controller has got to be moved under the hood near the turbo. Waiting for the Haynes manual to come in so I can check a whole list of other things. |
just blow the thing up!!!!!!!!!!!!
|
Now all you have to learn is to yodel and you'll fit right in.
|
I believe they yodel in switzerland, not sweden cool dude
|
use hard lines when running long lengths of vacuum hose. on mine i had a hard line to the BOV and just a couple of inches of rubber line. you can get stainless lines from canadian tire and pick up a cheap tube bender from princess auto. that'll let you keep the MBC inside the car.

Now you got me thinking...lol. I just may do that. Oh what would I do without princess auto....best store ever! They just opened one in newmarket, 15 mins from home! May just have to make a trip there tomorrow. With the boost back to stock, she ran great today. Never cut out once. Still doesn't feel 100% though. Can feel it dropping power a couple times through the rpm range, which makes me believe the injectors and fuel system needs a good cleaning. Prob gonna run some fuel injector cleaner through it. Also just ran out of gas, parked in the driveway...again. $20 of gas out the tail pipe. Getting close to having her all ready to go now. Also the shift knob came right off in my hand...lol. |

After talking with the guys over on turbobricks.com, discovered she does have an over boost switch which kills the motor when it sees too much boost. It's a simple by-pass too, simply connect the 2 wire together and you can run as much boost as you want! Awsome!
Even with a 2 psi increase, she felt quite a bit quicker. Looking into getting a 10 day permit too... |
A/F ratio gauge installed. Doesn't work right for some reason, I'm guessing the voltage is different from what the gauge is calibrated to read....oh well, fix that later.
Car still doesn't run 100%. It runs fine just driving normal, but as soon as you go into boost, it backfires once or twice, drops in power for brief moments, and when you get up higher in the rpm's she starts to run better. I still think it's a problem with the in-tank fuel unit/pump. The saga continues... |
Please give us an update of the cash that flows into the beast as well.
