Sub woofer hook ups

Hey all, I have a question about hooking up my subs to my amp 2 12" Kaptions. I have a 5 channel Sony Xm 7557 amp. Works great the only problem is when ever I turn up the bass the amp shuts off. I figure the amp cannot handle the subs so I have tried different ways of hooking them up. First I tried only hooking up one sub. But I didnt like the way it sounded. so I bridged them both. Still same problem. Tonight I did something different. Im not sure what will happen but I was able to turn the bass to max and the volume to max and the amp did not shut off. PLease let me know if this is ok: I took the positive from the amp to the positive of one speaker. I took the negative from the amp to the negative of the other speaker. then I took the remainig + and - for the speakers and hook them up together. I hope this makes sense.

Does anyone know if this is OK and what this type of hook up is called.

I forgot to mention that the amp has only a single channel for the subs.

Thanks in advance...

series..ya it's okay..yer running the amp at 8ohms if they're 4 ohm subs..
bridged (connecting both subs + to + and - to -) you were running bridged, and probably a 2ohm load..
amp might not have been able to handle it..

Amp was probably working to hard (to big a load) and over heating before. The way you have it now won't give you as much power but it won't damage anything.

The way you hae them wired will do that. It is amazing what a difference different wiring can make.

Ditch the 6x9 and get an amp and better front speakers.

The amp I have is a 5 channel I have Eclipse front speakers already. I just want to get some more sound in the back. Does anyone know if there is a way to put a tweater and a mid inthe back space for the 6x9's some sort of adapter. Or should i just get some 6x9's

Thanks everyone for the info...
