Sony, Kenwood, Panasonic, Clarion, Alpine and Pioneer are good manufactuers. Sony usually has the 'looks over funtionality' but they still do the job. If you have a connection to Best Buy or Futureshop you can save a good 50 dollars off sony decks.

go to a place called Ultra Auto sound & security it's at 427 and dundas, Talk to the guys in there, for cd decks I reccomend Alpine, Kenwood, and panasonic. I have never seen problems with these decks. I have fixed my friends sony's and I don't think the quality is in their decks. Just my 2 cents.

Check out each manufactuers site and view the different decks. There the motorized ones, detachable ones, standard ones.. Also some play mp3's and wma while others don't... You have to narrow your choice. Personally I would buy the deck to play CD's and let my amp take care of the speakers.

Don't get too technical if you are just going to do a standard setup. If it has rca outputs, plays cd's (cdr and cd-rw) mp3's, you are good to go. The rest is based on looks.. Find one that looks good to you. if you worried about warranty, future or best buy has an additional fee for extended warranty.

Kenwood KDC-205 CD Car Deck
I actually like the whole look of it and the set up.
That i have to say i like. What does everyone think on this model? 150 bucks from future shop. THe pioneer ones were kinda ugly.

pretty much any aftermarket deck u buy in the stores now, you will be able to add subs later on and upgrade your speakers.
Since u dont know much about car audio u probably wont be able to tell the difference in sound quality as yet........you wont until u start getting into it.
I'd go for a deck that has mp3s, not worth buying a new deck without it.
Alpine is probably the best of the widely known brands.
Pioneer i would say is second best, better looks than alpine, but not as good sound quality.

if u want ur deck to draw attention and possibly get stolen go with any of the flashy brands that have been listed above.
IMO a clean look is what matters, just as much as sound quality. For me Eclipse makes the best decks on the north american market by far so i would suggest them.
Give yourself a budget and decide whether you want to have front and sub rca pre-outs, mp3 capability and many of the other dfeatures and then go from there.

^^ lol Chris you know I would eventually come in here and disagree with you!
What he said about the deck drawing attention doesn't really make a diff, I got the Pioneer 8600, awesome deck, and yeah I guess you could say it's a really "flashy" deck. But it has all the good stuff inside of it, and doesn't really look all that different from the Eclipses, cept for maybe the silver ***** on the Pioneers.
I would say goto a few different stores, so you can see all the brands of decks, and try and take a listen, or ask about the features then try and decide.

hahahah, everytime I say something you have to disagree you bastard:P. I just prefer decks that arent all chrome faced with big flashy buttons that are very visible when the deck is off.

i dont like clarion, for some reason they seem like garbage to me, ive never heard hard evidence that there decks work that well either...
My choice is pioneer but they look kinda ugly IMO but sound great
Pioneer has always been a sturdy rugged manufacturer, never had any problems with them.
My fav is the denon or Nak decks
