A Cap would never hurt. It makes the amp respond better because there is no fluctuation in power. Also it helps for the lights in the car not dimming when the bass hits. How big is the cap? 1 Farad 2 Farad?

Is is essentially a waste of $$ because everyone seems to think that it will give steady power to the amp (thus no dimming).... However you cars alternator has to work even harder to now charge the capacitor before it is even is sent to the amp. I have over 2000watts RMS and unless im pumping it so loud you can feel the air; i have no dimming. HOWEVER, i have upgraded to a deep cell battery and 2 AWG to each amp..

My .02 if your amp is dimming your lights and your voltage is dropping to the point where your dash lights are dimming, dont replace anything.. Upgrade your wiring to amp, battery and ground. Then upgrade battery to a deep cell. Then upgrade your amp wiring and grounds. If you are still having problems buy a new alternator or a high current alternator (even better). And lastly upgrade to a quality amp that will efficiently use the power it recieives. Your better off spending your hard earned $ on an upgrade i suggested; rather then place a band-aid on an obviously puny stock altenator that is 8 years old.

Actually the cap is going to help your alternator. The cap is essentially a smaller version of a deep cell battery. It charges almost instantly after the power has decreased substantially. Although you are correct proper wiring is a huge help as well. However, my car is pushing 5500 watts at 1 ohm. I use 0gauge power and ground as well as a second deep cell battery, guess what still had power fluctuations until I placed a 2 farad cap in there. Now no problems. Hope this helps you out.

I was under the same assumption. I've also had an electrical engineer tell me they would help.

WOW I see a lot of people here joined the internet band wagon on why not to get a cap.

Caps are useful however they shouldn't be used to band-aid a system.

If you have a noise issues (AC leak from the alt) sometimes a cap can filter it out.

isn't a compititon system different from a "street" setup you are going for all out loudness right?

i might be wrong i don't know much about that sort of thing but when i put my cap in I instantly noticed a differance the sound quality was much much better.

the mids and highs when cranked weren't as distorted I could be wrong again here but I love having a cap in my system made a huge differance

You just said it yourself in your post. Only on the internet is where you can find caps are useless. However in my exp. Caps are useful HOWEVER 99% of the time they're used to band-aid a system. IMO upgrade your wiring and battery posts first (mainly the ground).

Plus caps are used to filter out unwanted AC voltage from your DC system. AC voltage makes the power supply to your amps dirty and causes noise/whine issues. (btw if you don't know AC voltage is made by your alt then converter to dc)

However if you chose not to use one I really don't care.

ok dude, keep spending your money on a cap, ill spend my money on better batteries and wire upgrades.

Not to create an e-argument or anything, but im pretty sure that if the system is upgraded and the actual issue with the system has not been addressed then the cap will need to be upgraded i.e. You will need a cap so many farads for an increase in wattage?? Someone correct me if im wrong
