Building a new sound system - Advice needed

Im looking to get away from the big subs for they weigh too much and take up too much space. Considering the possibly of going with a single 8" woofer or sub or nothing at all.

I've always been a fan of Alpine head units, so therefore im pulling out my old (non-amplified) Alpine CDA-7977 and installing a new CDA-9886.

My question is what should i go with for door and rear speakers. My first choice would have been Alpine Type-X, though with how much technology has changed, i have no idea what is good anymore.

At the moment the car only has door speakers and i plan on getting the OEM rear speaker panels (from the SI i believe). I have no intention of hacking and modding the OEM panels.

I don't really know which speakers are better/worst but what I wanted to do for quite a while now is get a single 10" sub and put it in the trunk floor. Would cut down on some weight, and also still have all the room in the trunk.

Or off to the side behind the wheel-well. The only problem is the inference of the magnet with the steel uni-body.

Hey! I have a CDA-9886 and it rocks!! where are u planning to buy the h.u.?? I got mine from 2001 audio video and was not satisfied at all with the install..

the installer stole the keys to take out the unit. and he didnt want me to watch him do the install.. PLUS they charge extra to attached the ipod cable and usb cable!! what a rip off!!

Contact Selective Sound, I think guys name is Davis..

If you are looking at puting a hard drive once you get the head unit. check the hard drive you are using.. start up amperage should be i think .05mA.. otherwise you would still have to power it thru cig. lighter..

BTW...i once had the Alpine 12" 2ohm Type-R sub in a 2ohm 6th order band-pass box with a MRV-T420 mono amp and another Alpine v12 4 channel amp for the 2 speakers. Together weighed about 80lbs.

well if you would like my 0.02, its hard to design a system for you. you bring up your old system yet say you would like no subs or an 8. your not going to be happy, i don't care what anyone says. personally the weight isn't that big of a deal. I have the same ride, with sound deadener, system and my 200lbs *** i'm at 1190Kg. I'm running 2 12's and have most of my trunk area. I only lost 2 inches in height total. I could use a little more weight in the back actually. that and some more pony's in the front. i like being the guy having fun driving and listening to my tunes, and i like loud. anyways.... getting back to the issue. your deck is nice i'm using an x100. i had full alpine in my teg never any problems and sounded great.

Loud subs just doesn't do it for me anymore. I'm more for the dynamics now.

Any suggestions for door speakers besides Alpine?

IF i do get a sub, then it will most likely be an 8" JL. The Alpine type-r subs were way too tight and demanded too much power.

its not about loud subs. its about acoustics. without a sub you can not achieve proper sound. good luck with the 8. anyways I'm using JL XR's the C5's are nice too the deal was too good on the X's.

Indeed, though it doesn't take very much sub frequency to achieve those dynamics.

Anyways, ill talk to my friend with competition experience.

Thanks all for the opinions and comments.

what are you running the mids from ? deck? my suggestion is use Boston Pro or Focal up front ,use only two speakers (front) for mids and highs and run the power from an amp, it's much cleaner. a sub like a kicker 10L5 or L7 . takes less than one cube ft sealed. you don't need rears as the sub will make the rears sound like crap. for SQ, stick your head in the middle of the car and listen. you don't need rears!! it's only if you have passengers in the back. keep the sub power under 500 watts for a nice balance, although i love SQ with an emphasis on basssssssss, lol

I agree with the clean sound. That is why i had the non-amplified cda-7977.

Im liking the sound of the Kicker. Would you use it as a woofer or a sub?

Interesting, you do have a good point about skipping the rear speakers. At the moment im running just the fronts and 10" Clarion sub with a 100watt amp. It sounds good other the fact that the sub is hooked up as a woofer.

Im going to install the new deck today, in which ill run the rear speakers wires to the trunk and see how it sounds.

In my car I have an older Clarion HU, Rockford Fosgate 6.5's up front and Rockford 6x9's in the back, both running off a Rockford 301X. I ran like this for years and it was pretty balanced, but because I had the speakers making bass, I had to keep it down, so I couldn't really hear it on the highway with the windows down, which didn't make me happy. My buddy tossed me an old MTX thunder 6000 10" sub and a Rockford 200M that he had kicking around and honestly my system sounds great, its perfect for me. I used to have 2 JL12w3's but you grow out of that I think, atleast I did.

you should use the sub as a sub and not woofer. subs are meant for lower frequencies, and even if it does play 200HZ, doesn't mean it'll sound good. keep the crossover on your amp to low pass. i don't know your overall budget, but if you run an amp for your doors and SUBwoofer, it'll make your doors sound cleaner. you cannot run 100 watts for a sub though, it will just sound like bass, kinda want to feel it. it takes more power to run a sub, depending on the sub.
what i would do during the recession, buy a 4CH amp. use two channel on fronts, Boston Pro 5.25 or (Focal Kevlar is the bomb but quite pricey) and run the 3rd and 4th for the kicker 10 L5 in a sealed box. used SoloBarics aren't too hard to find
spend around $500 fronts, or less if you find a used set, top of the line soundstream sounds amazing too, maybe a bit cheaper as i've been out of the game for a while.
$<400 amp 4CH. not some can tire crap. lol Rockford Punch is always great value, Alpines alright, but had problems with my sub clipping . pushed it way too hard, lol
kicker solo 10L5 in box , $400. of course, it all gets cheaper if you buy used. i would buy my fronts new imo. kicker 10L5 in a sealed can be found for $250 max
run front speakers on the Alpine deck, i'm sure sounds decent, but it's not meant for that. decks are for playing the music, media, controlling the sound etc. speakers are what sound comes out from and having a correct speaker playing the right freq. is important for SQ, amp is for power. don't mean to be silly, but if you think about it, makes sense right. so now you will not run power from the deck. it really depends on the budget though.
in your CX , for space, i would face the sub up and put it in the spare tire. and you will still have room in the trunk. PM me if you have questions. i have been out of the stereo scene for a while so i'm not familiar with the new brands of amps and model numbers.

sorry, just read that you're gonna run deck power to rear and run it as woofer, it will sound crappy!!! not to be mean, but playing around and listening , you will the most. just don't blow anything, lol!! FOR NOW, you should use your 100w and run it as a sub, and not a woofer. low pass filter

Awesome! Thank you everyone for your help....now i have to save up some money.

Yes, soundstream makes some nice amps, same with Alpine and ARC AUDIO (probably the cleanest of amps)
