I always check an engine this way

compress test dry, compress test wet, then if any problems are found leak down test.

When you do the leakdown test you would want to pull your valve cover to check the cam lobes to comfirm your at TDC for that cylinder.

you could pull the valve cover or just stick a long screwdriver in and manually turn the crank until its at TDC.

I used to do the screwdriver trick until once I snapped the shaft. AHHH Oh guess where it went?

That was on a 60 degree 2.8 V6 chevy

If that's the case, can any one please tell me how many labour hours will it take to rebuild the engine?

I'm debating whether to rebuild it or just replace it. As someone already said, replacing the engine will cost about $800 in labour, plus the cost of the used engine (which may or may not last very long). This is why I want to find out how much labour hours it'll take to rebuild the engine. Thanks again for all your help.

Alot of hrs @ $70/hr+

When I had an old D15 a place told me $900 + parts for a rebuild. WTF!! A SOHC ZC is what $500 and it had a higher HP rating than D15

Get your engine tested. All you know it could be just a headgasket which should run you about $400 to $500 to fix at a shop.

Can you recommend a good shop in Toronto where I can buy a used JDM engine and have it installed for a total of $800? Will there be any warranty on the engine and labour?

I've talked to one of the sponsors of this site, and they want $800 labour, plus the cost of the used engine.

Please let me know. Thanks. Really appreciate your help.

Tiger Japanese Auto parts.

I've purchases quite a few engines from them and never had any significant problems. Every shop will have some sort of issue..

Thanks for the information. Does Tiger Japanese Auto Parts install engines as well? Do you know if they offer any warranty on their used engines?

Thanks.

Umm. yeah they install aswell.

Call them up, Do a search on yellowpages.ca for japan auto parts.

You'll get a large list of auto shops.. call them all and ask the questions. THey all do installs and all do warranties.
