You can go with 2 in the front, if you are short on money and whatnot. If money allows, get 4.

I'd rather have 4 new all seasons than 2 winters... or just get all 4 winters if you can, that would be ideal. but ultimately how you drive determines your rubber req'ts.

go with four or none at all
one end of the vehicle won't react and perform the same as the other
handling would be inconsistent and you'll probably understeer/understeer more often

I can think of 3 instances where my car spun out of control using just the front 2 changed last winter. ****ty, but it did happen. Luckily non of the times i hit anything or was hit.

On this subject, if you are going to replace only 2 (I recommend 4, by the way), you should put them on the BACK! This thinking also applies with new tires. The ones with better traction should also go on the back (regardless of FWD or RWD). This is the opinion of tire experts, not mine.

Think about it though, with the Winter tires on the back:
- you can't go as fast because you will be traction limited with the all season driving wheels slower=safer.
- with the better tires on the back, there is less chance of the rear end 'getting away' and spinning around.

yeah, I also read that article, but to ME... stopping power is >>>> anything, so it's most important to have good rubber in the front, and at least decent rubber in the rear.

This comes down to knowing your limits which is something that most people can't do. If you put 2 winter tires on the front of your FWD car then you have the advantage of increased stopping and accelerating and the rear of your car, watch out now, has the EXACT SAME lateral stabillity as if you had 4 all seasons on. The only reason that you would spin out with 2 on the back is that you outdrove the traction of your rear tires because you don't know what you are doing. If you had 4 all seasons you would just be all over the road instead of spinning.

This is probably the reasoning behind the opinion of the tire experts that My SiR brought up, most people given the increased grip of their fronts will outdrive the rears.

If you, as bbarbulo pointed out, know what it is you are doing while driving a car in winter, the 2 front snows would be safer for an attentive driver.

I had 2 practically bald all seasons on the rears a couple of winters ago because I wasn't doing much driving. My rear never slipped because I drove like I had 2 practically bald all seasons on the rears, surprisingly.

you will also notice excessive tire noise if you run two only. if you get all 4.. (same brand)... you will find that the noise is alot less annoying.. i think allseasons are not worth buying,, winter tires for winter,, summer tires for summer..

you will get a serious lack of control with only 2 thats because the grip at the rear tires will be next to nothing and so therefore you will have the rear of the car step out on you .. of course you could put the 2 snows on the rear but the result will be uncontrolable understeer....

get all 4 and be safer
