When a timing belt snaps...

Just wondering...on a 92-95 civic non-vtec motor (I don't know designations for d series that well).. When the timing belt snaps, what could it possibly destroy in the process?

Reason being, i might pick up this 92-95 hatch for a beater but the timing belt snapped, otherwise the car is in pretty good condition.

Would it be as simple as slapping on another head? I haven't the slightest clue...looking for some insight.

ThanX.

bent valves.....damaged pistons....or you could get lucky and have no damage.

we have interference engines.. so yes the engine could be ruined. Sometimes nothing happens.. sometimes a valve is bent, etc.

That's the thing, i have no idea what to expect. I just know it had a snapped t-belt and hasn't been driven since.

I'm looking for best and worst case scenario's.

Thanks for your input.

A piston would go threw your hood and kill someone.

Ya, but i'm not looking for anything extravagant. Just from point a to point b over the winter. The body is in pretty sound condition, very little rust..even for the typical spots.

I'm gonna pick it up for like $400...so even if i have to pick up another d15 and swap it in there, it's still a deal...don't you think?

doesn't really sound like a deal if the tb snapped the owner probably didnt do much other maintence on it so you could be looking at paying alot more after you've bought it to get it on the road to drive

ok, aside from the fact that the car might have not been taken care of in the best way, the suspension feels solid, the body is in good shape...for all you know, every other thing could have been done aside from the timing belt/water pump. D series motors aren't worth much anyways, so it's not like it will be a big thing to replace it if need be.

So when the belt snaps, do you have to replace just the head or is there more to it? or less to it?

you have to check it out. Do a compression test on it.

edit: oh wait the timing belt is off nvm

ok....say the belt snapped at a bad speed. say **** is messed up in there. Is it easier to buy a new head and slap it on or is there more extensive stuff that has to be done?....assuming the belt snapped while the car was travelling at a high speed.

well the pistons might have smashed the valves, bending them and quite possibly damaging the pistons. In which case, you'll be swapping in a new engine.

another question....any way to tell what the extent of the damage is? does it require ripping the motor apart?

well if you set the timing properly and put on a new belt and it runs like crap, then its most likely some of the valves are bent, in which case, yes, a tear down is necessary to tell the extent of the damage. But if it runs good after you put a new belt on then enjoy your new, cheap beater.

Hard to tell if the suspension feels solid if you have never driven it, don't u think?
