Just some info, 5w20 is what they are using in the 06 DX and LX, not that it has anything to do with what you asked.........:bling:

Might as well ask this while the thread is up. Would any1 recommend using 5w50 on a d16y8?

imported_SIR_Injected 24-Oct-2005 11:22 PM

im using 5w20 in my 7thgen i know its thinner! but i know what thicker oils do to your engine! i almost say thinner is better!
no gunk build up is key

pwllam 25-Oct-2005 12:16 AM

Go with a nice synthetic 5w20

LEITNER 25-Oct-2005 07:41 AM

50 weight is a lot thicker than 30. If your engine was designed to run on 30 use it. Reason why beacause there are clearances, oil pump, etc that are design to work effectively with the correct grade of oil.

20 is thinner and I heard the results were slightly better mpg.

30 is basicly standard now. I haven't seen 40 in a while (or haven't paid attention to it).

50 is thick. If the oil is too thick your engine has to run a bit harder to overcome the increase friction. eg. less mpg, etc., Also the correct volume of oil might not get to all the areas in the engine.

75w90 is gear oil. Now that's thick & smelly stuff.

If I wrong please let me know. Nothing worst than spreading wrong info.

Go with what is recommended. If you decide that you wanna go with a thicker weight oil, then I would probably go synthetic. (do not use USDM Castrol Syntec) I probably wouldn't use a thinner oil in any case. The basic theory behind using a thinner weight oil or Synthetic oils is that it will reduce your rotating mass (slides off the crank faster) and the friction. (between bearing surfaces) Using a thin oil will likely promote viscosity breakdown, in which case your bearings would not be lubricated properly, aswell you might start burning oil. (not a good scenario, V-tec engines tend burn oil naturally)

okay! maybe ill just use what is recommended then HONDA 5w30

imported_hdave 25-Oct-2005 08:15 PM

honda reccomends using 5w20 for the 7th gens i believe

DarkKid 25-Oct-2005 09:52 PM

use 5w30 which is honda recomonded. run 10w 40 if ur engine is older.
