i had my ball joint snapped on yonge+a street north of eglinton hahahaha.... it was very very jokes.... a few gayass stop and tell me to move my car (i had emergency lights on)... then i'm like "why don't you give me some help?" then they would just leave without a word.... 2 ladies offered me their phone to call tow truck since they thought i haven't called yet (but its the CAA taking a long time)... 2 men offered me help to push the car aside but after they saw the wheel, they were like "yikes... that's nasty!" haha... and 1 man asked me if i need a tow truck and a good mechanic, then i told him i got caa coming and i have a personal mech... it was a great experience to learn how to handle unexpected things (the bad thing was i was gonna bring the car to the shop that day in the late-afternoon/evening)...

oh btw, that noon, i was dropping my gf to work too... so it was almost similar situation to you.... it was a friday (almost reaching rush hour)

And this ladies and gentlemen is exactly why I replaced every single bail joint on my car this year, and also why I constantly check the ball joint, bearings and tie rods. Being stranded sucks.

When my ball joint was about to go on my Accord there was a rattle sound every time I went over a bumb. Also when I jacked up the car the wheel would wiggle from side to side.

a bad upper balljoint u will be able to move the wheel back and forth while the car is on the ground...a bad lower is a bit harder to check even when the wheel is in the air because sometimes there is no back and forth or side to side movement but if u stick a pry bar between the control arm and the spindle and pry u may get some up and down movement
