SI/SIR Brakes

guys what is the difference between the stock '00 SI and SIR front brakes? Is there a difference?

DumbasSi 05-Oct-2004 08:38 PM

The front brakes are the same at 10.2" in diameter.

The 99-00 SIR's have rear disks, a bigger front swaybar, a rear swaybar (SI's lack one) and the front LCA's are slightly different.

The lower control arms are totally different extremly stronger.

size is about the same, calipers are slightly bigger (piston bore) on the SiR

Since we are on this topic, will regular 14" OEM steelie clear SiR caliper? The ones came from, say, a 00 DX hatch?

Also, the use of SS brake lines, anyone using a set at the momemt? I need brake lines and I am towards SiR OEM ones, however, if people have been using a SS setup and driven all year around, I would like to know a thing or two, mostly maintenance and wear and tear.

Thanks

Charles, I put on 14" steelies on my Civic in Winter use (just like the ones your car came with, of course Honda OEM steelies). I have SiR OEM brake lines so, I can't comment about SS.

yeah, totally, 14 inch STEELIES will clear them - NOT aluminium wheels though.

I use SS lines, but I don't winter drive my kaa so I dunno. I don't see anything wrong with it, other than salt working it's way into the braids. But being stainless and teflon and whatnot, I don't see how salt could harm them?? just wash them well in the spring :)

maybe even give them a generous application of rust inhibitor for tool and dies. You can get it at an industrial supply place found in your yellow pages.

Looks like this brake upgrade will eat into my wallet more than I thought. I got the setup for cheap, but the replacement parts are killing me! :P

As long as 14" steelies can clear them, that's good. At least I don't have to spend money and get 15" steelies. I will go slow on this upgrade. Get the stuff hot tanked first next week, and slowly sourcing out parts. I will either go with OEM SiR lines, or Endless ones.

But brake pads and rotors, still undecided...

imported_starboy869 07-Oct-2004 02:40 PM

is there a big difference between OEM and aftermarket steelies other than price?

I was planning to head to junkyard to get some 15" steelies and hopefully decent winter tires.

bbarbulo 07-Oct-2004 02:47 PM

Nova, why hot tanked??

OEM pads and rotors... or maybe Williams or Hawk pads but be prepared for extra dusting. plus uber-low temps of winter may make the braking a little harder for the first few times.

Nova_Dust 07-Oct-2004 10:22 PM

I want to get things hot tanked cause they are just too dirty for my liking. I always clean up used parts so they are clean to handle. I do attempt to install this thing myself so I want them at least half decent dirtless. Right now, it is unbearable.

I looked again today, looks like the brake lines aren't cut afterall, it was cut at the hardlines above them. So in the sense, if the pads are good, rotors are good, I might rock these right away and see how the braking has improved.

thanx guys
i doubt i will bother with the front upgrade from SI to SIR but rears will do forsure
