Short Shifter inquiry

I need to get my clutch replaced for my 1998 Honda Civic (SI coupe) and I'm lookin' to replace the stock shifter with a short one.

I remember hearing/reading one time that apparently, Toucan Industries' (Ractive) Short Shifters suck.

Now before I buy a short shifter (since the transmission place said they'll put it in for free along with the clutch replacement), I just wanted to know....

Does brand matter? Or can I get pretty much anything? (Ebay has these Tenzo brand shifters for $30 CDN.)
Can anyone make any recommendations/input?

Many thanks.

this is all you need to know... cheap short shifters suck, many of them have snapped. I'd stick to B&M, at their price point, they represent great value.

cut ur stock shifter in 5 min and u got urself a shotshifter 4 free :D

imported_GoldBadge 16-Jun-2005 03:29 PM

Cut it and you will literally have a "SHORT" shifter. Cutting your shifter does not decrease the distance that the arm will pivot, thus keeping the throws the same distance.

A short throw shifter can sit around the same height as stock, but still decrease the actual throw significantly.

I had a short shifter, didn't like it that much, prefer the feel of stock...but you should upgrade all the bushings, that makes a big difference..

cutting the shifter DOES reduce the movement but, increases the effort needed to move it...B&M shifters are atleast a 1.5" shorter than stock ones and for this reason I dont like mine but it does shft like a dream...oh and I wish B&M would put the OEM bend in the shifter too...:richslap:

Well, the shifter will still be pivoting the same amount of degrees if you just cut it down. So it's arguable....The distance your hand moves is less, but the actual throw of the shifter is still the same.

So you got a new shifter I take it, Cynikal? What did it run you if ya don't mind sharing?

Cynikal.Mindset 16-Jun-2005 08:15 PM

the b&m shifter kit was 80bucks

chris_si98 16-Jun-2005 08:58 PM

I've only heard good things about B&M.

imported_Moe_Mentum 21-Jun-2005 09:13 AM

I, too jsut installed a B&M into my car, the kit comes with all the bushings, and all Ness. hardware, and uses your stock collar and gives you grease as well, I had an SPW shifter, hated it, i love this thing to DEATH, its frickin' amazing,

if nobody feels like installing it into their car, I can do it for a heck lot cheaper than eny store...

but all praise to B and M....the best...you get what you pay for...

just my 2 cents!

Kevin

B&M suck! Mine rattles like shyte. I replaced all the bushings in it and the linkage. No it;s not hitting the exhaust so that's not it either the fact is it doesn't use a sealed pivot bearing just rubber washers so there is a little bit of play. I am going to try out a skunk2 one and see how that goes. As for the throws on the B&M they are great and it shifts smoothly.
