with the price of oem's.. i'd just get some aftermarket bushings. I've heard good things about ES bushings? I think that's the name. And why not upgrade to a short shifter while your at it?

There are 2 different sets of bushings. There is the Energy Suspension bushings which replace the stock rubber bushings where the shifter linkage bolts to the tranny and the underside of the car.

There is also a re-build kit available from Honda that replaces the rubber O-rings, nut/bolt, and a few othe rsmall pieces thatactully for the pivot of your shifter where it bolts to the linkage. In many cases, the O-rings deteroriate and fall apart and becuase of thsi, the shifter developes lots of play.

With my old Civic I did both. I bought ES bushings and a re-build kit from Honda. It was about $40 for both.

Performance Improvemenst is where I GOT MINE LAST TIME.

The kit from Honda includes and replaces parts #4, 5, 23, 11. It will greatly improve the way your shifter feels. Your car is old, so most of the rubber parts are probably gone.

from my experiences the ES bushing kit doesn't help with the sideways sloppyness of the shifter, i've replaced them on a few cars and it didn't make a lick of difference.
But i've never tried changing the parts DumbasSi mentioned. I bet they help more with that particular problem. But for the ease of install (which i'm sure you'll probably have someone else do) and the cost of the part, the ES bushing kit is worth it, and makes the shifter feel so much smoother when shifting.

The parts in the kit are mostly rubber and plastic except for the new nut and bolt. The non metal parts wear out over time and the shifter doesnt fit the linkage firmly. I'll bet the O-rings are non-existant in his car. The O-rings go, the plastic cracks and the bolts rust.

Buy an aftermarket shifter rebuild kit. It's the same as OEM but a fraction of the price, it will solve your problem.

Yes I did get the problem fixed.
Michael the diagram shown in this thread is not the one from Honda. All the parts are pretty much there just in different #'s.

Basicly I got the part from Performance Improvements
for $24+ tax

& @ Honda I got the re-build kit for $35+tax

but the main problem was part # 12 (according to your diagram)

Now the shifter is 100% AMAZING.

The parts they took off wernt even that bad 90% of my prob was # 12.

Thanks guys for the help greatly appreciated feels 100% diff now

the whole shifter linkage was the problem?

I'm having the same prob with my shifter.

Do I just ask the parts guy @ Honda for a rebuild kit for my shifter or is there an actual name for it or part number?

And I guess this is the other part I would need for a '96??

May I ask why you didn't want a short throw kit? You can get one for less than $50...

I'm just getting a megan racing short throw and ES bushings soon. Solve all my sloppy shifter problems and gives nice short shifter movement.

If you're referring to me, I already have a short shifter in there but it's been over 5yrs so things have probably worn out.
