pls help!~installing aftermarket tachometer!

pls help!~installing aftermarket tachometer!
i am sure that i connected every wire correctly.
and i set the cylinder setting to 4 b4 i install it to my civic.
the tachometer light is working,
but the needle doesn't move when i start my engine or the car is running.
when i try to set the shift light..the needle moving with no problem.
i tried to step my gas padal very hard...i saw the needle moved up once and hit the shift light point..(i only saw it once )
and one time, i did this again..the needle doesnt move, but the shift light is on.
the problem that i guess is:
the tachometer wire that connect to my civic tach signal wire is not long enough..
so i used 2 wires to connect it to make it longer.
(tach wire+1 wire+1 wire+civic blue tach signal wire)
do u think thats why it will make the tach signal become very weak????????????????????

naw, if you soldered the connections, the drop in resistance should be minimal so the signal won't be weak.
It seems to me like you have a bad connection somewhere... is the tach new or used?

Why not break out the multimeter??

It should hurt more as you rev..

i am not sure...it hit to the shift point or not..coz the needle is not moving...i just try to step the gas padal very hard sometimes..and the shift light is on sometimes..

(the needle doesnt move, when the shift light is on)

1. turn on your multimeter 
2. set it to read a range for about 12 V DC
3. verify that you've set it correctly by going right to the battery and check volts there
4. go into the cabin and ground the black probe to a screw in the dashboard FRAME
5. use the red probe and connect it to the SIGNAL wire on the tach
6. observe the voltage on the multimeter - there should be SOME voltage that varies as you rev your motor
7. report back!
