metal in my oil
 

So i did an oil change today and when i was draining the oil pan i found little pieces of metal in the last little bit of oil. it wasn't a whole lot but it raised some concern

now this is the first time i did an oil change myself on this car so i am not sure if this is the first time they have appeared but i did just recently seafoam my car and i am wondering if maybe it could have something to do with it.

does anyone know where these pieces of metal could have come from and how serious this could be????

the first oil change i did on my neon had metal in it (198k) i just did an oil change like normal and kept doing them every 5-6k
the motor died (seized up after timing belt snap) with 240-somehting km on it, but it had quite a bit more cuz then cluster didnt work

im pretty sure it isnt super serious or anything but im not 100% sure.

the car doesn't seem to have changed at all

it feels and sounds the same to me

i have read in the forums that all cars will produce metal shavings in the oil but i don't see how that would be normal???

get yourself a magnetic drain plug, help stop that crap from circulating in the engine scoring the piston walls and destroying bearing surfaces

This sounds bad, I would be very worried about bearing failure. Either way you should get some sort of magnetic drain plug, you don't want to circulate that stuff around. Aswell it will give you the oppertunity to collect and examine the metal particles.

if u look at the selection at crappy tire u can find one for 5bucks

U can also put some strong magnets on the outside pan itself to help

The metal flakes look like they are aluminum though
I could be wrong but that’s what they look like to me so what good is a magnetic drain plug going to do???

I guess if the metal was coming from a bearing it would be steel right? So if I do get a magnetic drain plug and try that, it should help me source where these shavings are coming from right?

If there is no trace on the plug at my next change could this mean that the metal is aluminum and may be from something other then the bearing

what parts of the engine cooled by oil are aluminum???

Metal Flakes are bad!!! from what I've seen flakes, are usually from the rod or crank bearings.:banghead:

What kind of oil are you using? I know when I wasn't using the proper grade oil in the winter I got little bits of metal during my next oil change. After I switched to synthetic I've never had them in my oil again.

it's not synthetic and the previous owner never used synthetic
