intake performance gain?

intake performance gain?

i heard from some people that using the pipe-type intake on non-turbo engines will not gain any performance at all, might even cost power loss. the airbox type is better for non-turbo.
i mean technically, with the pipe, you'll get more air in, but this is what i heard from some people.
is that true?

I doubt you would ever loose any power but you sure as hell wont gain any on a non modded civic. Its mostly for looks and sound.

I've seen dyno results in some car magazines and sometimes you do lose hp. Maybe 2 or 3, but that's as much as your going to gain anyway.

If your going to get an intake, get it cause you like the sound. Don't get it for a performance gain. I have an intake, and I got it because of the sound. I could care less if I gain or lose power. Think about it, we drive civic's, not ferrari's.

i just have the k&n filter on oem airbox.
i might get the cai when i upgrade the cams later

well you can lose HP in certain ranges of the powerband, but you will gain HP in others....

ive seen ads with dyno charts showing sometimes up to a 15 HP gain on a 99-00 SiR.... with just a SRI, injen i believe claimed that. it showed claimed gains from lots of other companies.

if i can find that ad ill scan it and post it

yeah 15 hp at like probably 6800 rpms. That's pretty close to redlining your car. Who really drives their car that hard??

Do you want me to post a video of me taking my car, which makes power, to 8500rpm?
I take my car to 8.5K daily...hell thats what i built it for.

Honestly, you won't feel much of a difference with just an intake, whether it be a cold air or a short ram. But put a header and exhaust on and in combination with the intake and you will feel the difference.

You will not see significant gains with "filters on a stick" i like to call them. The problem with these intakes, escpecially short ram is the very hot intake charge compared to your stock oem air box. When I was N/A , low comp b18c i put down 155 with an aem short ram, and 163 with a jdm air box with an hks drop in filter. Thats 8 WHP...... However, cold air intakes do provide significant gains due to the more dense air charge. But why put a larger size intake when your tryign to sqeeze that through a stock t/b, stock intake manifold, stock head, stock exhaust? Its pointless. Waste of money.

You gotta start somewhere. Most people take it one mod at a time and an intake is a good place to start.

an SiR is a performance Civic... it's optimized for performance. if you think you can 'tune' better than a Japanese engineer with a ph.d then by all means, go ahead and mod your engine.

for me, unless you go big for mods, where you change the parameters for the whole car.... then you should leave it stock. My car has been stock engine right down to OEM filters everywhere till now. just now, I'm doing turbo all the way... and I'm going outside the design parameters of the car.
