Angry I'm so f*****G screwed!!!!!!!!

I was driving after work yesterday enjoying the nice whether, then it happened; my timing belt snapped and I was stranded on the road. So I took it to my local garage and he confirmed that it was. I wasn't too disappointed until I got back to the garage to pick it up then, I heard even more bad news. Supposably when the belt snapped It must have hit a valve and bent it. by this time I was  because the car is running on only 3 cylinders. So then I thought about it and said to myself WHAT THE f**k AM I GOING TO DO NOW. I didn't want him to take the head and inspect it because they were going to charge me a tish load of labour. I then took it home and all it does is shut off when I am stopped at a light, now its time to visit Altech for a b16. Its not all that bad after all, I was going to drop in a b16 anyways but not until next summer. My question is has this ever happened to anyone? If so, should I just fix the motor I have in now?

If you can afford a new engine do it. There is no point spending the money to fix an engine you are going to get rid of unless you have to.

just spend the extra money now for the b16
and you'll save on the long run since your dropping it in anywayz
that way you'll cut the cost of repairing an engine your not going to need
oh yea post the price quote of what it cost at altech=)
i want to do a swap too

See, the worst part is that the belt snapped prematurely I only have 168000 km's on my ride and the belt was changed at 90000km. Money?????? hmmmm Good question. Nah, I'm going to have to use my school money. Its alright thought cause I have 3 months b4 I go back and also a 10G Line of credit always helps too. As for the price I don't have an exact price, but I'll find that out on monday.

Still sucks though, I had so many plans to work on the body.

Complete 1st gen B16A - $1500
Mounts - $600

Labour will depend on where you go but you should be able to get a clean install with everything for less than $3000 total.

You forgot to factor in the cost of the rest of the misc things.. like axles, shiftlinkage, rad hoses, T/B cable, coolant, oil, spark plugs, timing belt, water pump, etc... Some necessary, some misc.. every little bit adds up.. So.. Jugglez.. the $3000 installed might be a little low. $3500 installed would be more realistic.

Just wondering when should the timing belt be changed? and how much do one of those puppy's cost at the dealership (want original OEM) ?

In 90hatchSi's case, is it normal for the timing belt to go so fast? I mean 78K is pretty short life span (90k-168k). But I could be wrong

You should do it at 90K, earlier even just to be on the safe side. The OEM belt is around $60-$90 bucks depending on motor.

78K is pretty low, but maybe it wasn't an OEM belt.

Do I just ask for a timing bealt at the parts window and do I need anything else? How long does it usually take to do this kinda job?

I would change the water pump, and the other belts also. And if you're due for a valve adjustment you might as well take care of that too... since the top has to come off anyways.

Timing belt change takes a few hours.

make sure the water pump is a NEW unit not a rebuild

as for the 90 snaping it's belt

that happened to me with my 91 i was doing 140 on the 410
*snap*

the 1.5 and 1.6 are interferance motors so the piston will hit the valve

but it didn't with mine cuz i knew it was the belt

The biggest mistake people make is try to start the motor

thats what causes the piston to hit

I didn't and my piston and valves were fine
no problem

guy at the shop said that was a first for him

also make sure when they do the belt to set the timing at >18

the book says 16 ><2 but i found 16 was too low

18 is a good starting point

IMO
