Ignition Coil for Ef

Looking for an ignition coil for my 91 dx...i was thinking of running a msd blaster coil on my stock setup, and later upgrading with a msd ignition....will this work fine on my car, and are their any other coils out there that may be better?

imported_dented dx 29-Mar-2005 03:16 PM

i jsut have a blaster cap and coil on my zc and it works great
my old coil went a few times so i upgraded.

...i use stock, but i have like 5 dizzys from my parts car(no idea why i had so many) but they work perfect and the d15 ones work in a b16 too

There is really need to upgrade you ignition on a civic, especially on a stock motor! The stock ignition system is good for upto like 300 hp so upgrading to msd or whatever is basically a waste of time and money. Even if it does gain you any thing it be some minor that you would barely notice.

:dito: Seems to me like you would need some serious mods in order to need that extra voltage.

Dr.K 31-Mar-2005 10:39 AM

But why not? it cheap, easy to install, and far better than stock. Go for it. Why not replace a factory part with a more superior one for Minimal money? My buddy has a blaster coil on his modded B20 and he said it's alot more responsive after 4000RPM.

I got a msd blaster coil, pm me, its brand new unused !

zeeman 31-Mar-2005 12:26 PM

has anyone ever done a dyno comparison of stock ignition versus a fancy aftermarket one? Probably wouldn't see really any gains. Like mentioned above honda ignitions are pretty good stock.
The only thing i would do, if planning on revving higher than stock redline is get an external coil. Remove the heat source from inside the dizzy cap to help prevent the ever-common dizzy bearing failure.

says???? says?????

well i says that my CAI on my EF gained me 40 butt hp... cuz it's pharbon ciber jdm itr....

dyno proof? side by side?
honda's problem with their distributor based ignitions isn't voltage it's their distributor in the first place.... if you really WANT to upgrade your ignition system becaseu you realyl should if revving to RPMs of 10000+... this is what you do...

get a decent aftermarket engine management with output to 4 IGN coils go to the dealership buy 4 new honda coils from newer civics designed to go directly on the plug...it will look like this
http://www.wrenchead.ca/HTML%20Prese...der/img093.gif
use teh inputs that the above site suggests.....
and put it in your car... then you will truely be upgradign.

a single coil.. .has one problem, honda's original distributor design... where on HIGH rpm with high coil voltage the sparke tends to jump from one pickup point to another inside the dizzy... and a aftermarket coil is only helping that spark jump..

Ya lets blow a fortune on engine management when we can drop a few hundred bucks and Get a Coil/Distributor which is more than enough. You guy's are forgetting this mod is dirt cheap. So why not? Your not hurting anything. It can only be better if installed correctly. You guy's think every engine mod is a waste of money.

You really just dont get it do you? Your basically saying lets buy something weather it will help performance or not because its cheap? Buddy I dont consider between $200.00-400.00 bucks for an aftermarket igniton system cheap! Id rather put that money into something where it will actually make a difference even if not in the performance of the engine, but maybe, tires, suspensions, stereo etc. It seems to me like you just love to waste money in ricer mods. And you dont like to read and learn and try things for yourself. The ModFather is a very good friend of mine and he is one of the most knowledge people I know on performance modifcations on Honda cars especially older civics so I really would shut your mouth for once and listen to what he has to say because what he's really doing is helping you to not waste time and money on mods that arent going to gain you a worthwile amount of performance for the money. I know you are probably still gonna try to justify wasting tons of money on ricer mods for your civic but please dont try and influenece others to do the same.

The number one thing to remember about most modern ignition systems of today is that the majority of them are already pretty decent out of the factory and can support a resonable level of added performance, if this were the 60's or 70's then that would be a different story as ignition systems back then did not put out anywhere near the same level of power that modern systems do.

Dude calm down. Go take some Lithium or Something, Geez. Im jsut saying if the Guy wants to Get an Ignition Coil its not going to hurt. Its not a waste of Money considering its better than stock. Jacob's and MSD and all those other companie's wouldn't offer Honda stuff if people weren't buying it. And if the mod is functional than it can't really be a ricer mod. Ricer Mods are 18" rims and Big wing's which actually Hurt performance. But why get all Defensive? I didn't personally blaze you or the Modfather.Im jsut offering my oppinion. I see and try a ****load of aftermarket stuff each year. You shoudl read my Dads Coloumn in the Sun. Glen Konorowski. He's an Aftermarket accesorie's writer. Thats his Career.I see it all. We put $6000 in Mods on a Focus and Dyno'd it like 4 time's. SO trust me ive researched and seen these "Ricer" mods as you call them.

I still dont think you get it, the msd or most other aftermarket ign systems arent any better then stock nor do they outperform the stock system on that car, an ignition upgrade is a supporting mod designed to be used for greater spark if your are running forced induction or something along that line. And I really dont care what you dad has done to a focus either because the focus is a ****box and its a completely different car then a civic and it will respond differently to mods. Anyway I bore of arguing with you, and have fun wasting lots of money on your ignition upgrades and such.

ThrillHouse, Your telling me nothing in this catalouge is better than stock.???????
Anyway's choice is your's. Some people think its a waste of time. Some people think its worthwhile. Either way its not like this mod will break the bank or anything.
