help getting lock nuts off

Hey guys,

i have an ef with a b16 that i'd like to remove the motor from and scrap the car, but to get the motor out i have to take off the wheels (which would seem like an easy thing to do!)

anyway, the ef has 4 lock nuts on each wheel (why i don;t know), but i have no key for the lock nuts.

Just wondering if you guys have any ideas on getting them off? I've tried a few wrenches (pipe wrench, adjustable)...

this is what the lugs look like...

u can go to a performance shop and they might be able to get you a key for it if the nuts are a universal spline drive...

the car is not quite road worthy to drive to a performance shop....i'll try the "bolt extractor"..is that what it;s called? it;ll be in the automotive section?

thanks for the suggestions!

All you want out of the car is the engine,
You got lots of options
Cut the drive shafts - no need to take the wheel off
hammer off the lugs, will only work if you have steal wheels
Remove the upper and lower control arms and pop ou the drive shafts

but if you can get the tool all the better

the spline drives should mostly take the same keys, its easiest to just grab a new key from a wheel shop...

I can get them off for you. I've stripped off lock nuts before with a chisel and a hammer.

Just use a small tough chisel and work away the surrounding metal then rip off the lock.

My mechanic will do it for you if you want but he'll have to charge you a bit for the work.

I was in a similar situation this summer, needed to get a lock nut off and couldn't. For whatever reason, desparate i guess, took my car to Crappy Tire, which i NEVER do, and the mechanic used a socket much like the one pictured, but mechanics grade, and meaner looking, snap on...i think.

It was larger than the one pictured and it was a socket in itself so no need to use another socket. So you just hammer the socket on and take lug off with impact.
Or if you don't care about damaging the wheel, use and air chisel and take a chunk outta the lug.
Either way good luck.

ok, i went to wheel wizards here in hamilton and they said i would have to know the brand name of the lug nuts to get a universal key...so after some web research i'm pretty sure they are mcguard lugs...i hope anyway..they look identical...so i've ordered a key from PI...

Yuki: thanks for the offer, but you all the way out in thornhill and the car isn;t roadworthy to drive out there...thanks for the offer tho...

btw, if anyone has a universal mcguard spline drive key and if willing to let me borrow it for 5 minutes to get the wheels off you can have the 16 nuts on the car...it would save me 20$ for a key...

Your best solution was just listed. I used these to take off lock nuts when I used to work at crappy tire. If I had the tool, I would let you borrow it, but it belonged to the shop.

thanks for the suggestions guys...that jb weld idea is a good one, but i have 16 lock nuts on the wheels! lol...all the bolts on there are the "splinedrive" nuts...

Prophet: the nuts look exactly like the picture i have above...i don;t have a digi right now...but here is a link to the mcguard page i was looking at...

http://www.oakos.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=355&Product_Cod e=MCG84241&Category_Code=4800

the first pic (the pic with the lug nut and key) is what the nuts look like exactly...

I have the mcguard key.

You can come over and use it, but i'm in Mississauga.

Also, there should also be one lock nut per wheel, that look different than the image you posted above. The image above is just the spline lugs...you should also have one lock nut.
