get the haynes manual at CT..... it might not be the best guide but it is handy enough to get you through many problems

If you've never done this before, it'll take more than an afternoon.
Remember, you gotta take off the timing belt as well.

You will have to replace the header gasket as well, cuz you'll need to remove the headers so you can lift the head off the block.

I hope you have a good breaker bar cuz those head bolts are torqued down really really tight! Before you put the new gasket on, make your grind the block surface and head surface totally clean.

just to be a smart *** if you are looking for something that tells you the size of the head bolts and what not i don't think you should be attempting this your self !!!!!!!

but anyway here is the jiff!!!!!!!!!!

1. remove distributor (3 12mm bolts)(leave spark plug wires attached just take em off the plugs unplug the square wire connector and the circle one)
2.remove valve cover(4 10 mm bolts) be sure not to lose the special rubber washers on top!!!!
3. remove upper timing belt cover(2 10 mm bolts)!!!!!
4. drain coolant!(you may have to remove the plastic under the front of your car if you have it if not look up on the passenger side of the bottom of the rad there is a drain plug (usually) turn it counter clockwise)
5. remove head bolts there 14 mm
6. remove exaust manifold bolts , remove the bolt (14mm) into the block on the front of the motor thats connected to a mount on the bottom of the exaust, remove the (2 12 mm) on the rear mount of the downpipe
7.the easiest way to get the intake manifold off is to jack the car up crawl underneath with a 12mm socket and there is a mount under the intake that holds it on undo the 1 (or 2?) bolts that bolt the mount to the intake don't undo the mount from the block undo from intake , then remove the bolts that secure the intake to the block

DO NOT UNHOOK ANY WIRES OR VACUMLINES FROM THE INTAKE AS IT WILL BE STAYING IN THE CAR

DO NOT DETACH THE HEADER FROM THE DOWN PIPE OR THE DOWN PIPE FROM THE MID PIPE AS IT WILL ALSO BE STAYING IN THE CAR

8. take a 14 mm socket and loosen the tensioner pulley for the timing belt its located on the side of the motor under a little quarter sized rubber gromet!!!!!! once its loose slide the belt off to the side!!!!!! REASEARCH TIMING BELT CONDITIONS AND MAKE SURE YOURS IS OK !!! (your not far off from doing a timing belt half the engine is already apart!!!!!)
9. lift the head off the motor and depending on what kind of head gasket was used last time metal or the Mother ****ing pain in the ****ing *** cocksucking paper baked to the block and head gasket, you may need to pry the Exaust manifold off the head first and pry the intake manifold off too

line up the new head gasket after you clean the block clean all the **** outta the engine like paper bits and do ever step backwars !!!!!!

Helpful hints and safe practices!!!!!!!!!!

if you have a paper gasket clean it all off the engine !!!!!

Buy OEM its a nice metal one !!!!! 81 dollars @ newmarket honda gets you a head gasket , intake gasket, exaust gasket, upper and lower spark plug seals, dizzy seal and the seal for the other end !! and some big ****ing ring i have never seen before

oil the head bolts when you put them back in with like some 10w 30

DO SOME REASEARCH CUZ I DIDN"T TELL YOU HOW TO SET THE TIMING

MAKE SURE TIMING IS RIGHT THESE ARE ZERO CLEARANCE ENGINES if the timing is wrong you won't have top worry about a little old head gasket!!

if you jack up the car use jack stands!!!!

best to do it when the engine is cool!!!!!!!!!!!

when removeing the head bolts start in the front middle then back middle and work your way outwards in a rotating patern!!!!

you are not supposed to oil head bolts if they go into an aluminum block, you only oil them if they go into a cast block.

in fact honda uses a very mild thread lock at their factory

Don't forget there's a possibility that your head is warped and needs to be resurfaced.

if u loosen the timing belt, u can just slide the timing belt rite off that gear on the head, then just take the head outta the way, if u take a look, youll be able to figure it out man, its a whole lot easier than taking out that timing belt.

Trust me on this man, I have done it

VERY WRONG!!!

Proper procedure is to oil the head of the bolt and the threads slightly before installation. Looked at the service manual at work today. Please stop telling people wrong information.

my 1996-2000 honda civic service manual says nothing of oiling head bolts. please tell me the page number where you saw this information.

the most important thing about head bolts is to torque them properly, and most mechanics will reccoment using new head bolts as well, as the old ones are stretched, and may not torque down properly.

In your above post you said you don't have to take off the timing belt from the cam gears. Now your saying if you loosen the belt- I’m presuming you mean loosening the tensioner, you can slide the belt right off the cam gears????

Plain and simple- you have to loosen the tensioner, slide the belt off the gears. After follow white92d15b7 procedure.
