Head Gasket

no, he's right... it's an involved job, and anyone considering replacing one should already have a very good idea of what it is. so I'll start you off, but I'd really recommend NOT doing it yourself
it's the gasket that goes between the block and the head. It seals in compression pressure, as well as coolant and oil feeds into the head. a bad headgasket makes for a practically useless motor. overheating and loss of power are the main symptoms, as well as oil and coolant possibly mixing. replacement involves specialty tools prolly beyond the scope of what you'd have. You have to pull the timing belt, head, intake and exhaust manifolds (to aid in removal of head), then replace head studs (not essential but recommended), head should be machined flat, and block should be checked for flatness to ensure a proper seal with the new gasket. Newer all metal gasket is recommended, and apply copper spray to ensure a good seal. head must be torqued in sequence! and timing must be set. Failure to do any of that will result in possibly catastrophic engine failure. Labour alone for something like this will run you about... I guesstimate $500, and parts range anywhere from $300-500 depending on what you get (timing belt and waterpump recommended, new studs, new gasket obviously, fresh oil and coolant, gasket remover spray, some permatex ultra gray, some anti-seize, etc etc etc).

i've done one but it wasn't a Honda. once you get down to the dirty work, it's really not so bad. worst part is getting the nerves to start the work.
hell for me, the worst work is jacking the car up. I hate doing that for some reason everything else is cool

300-500 cuz you gotta have your head machined, put new studs on, new timing belt and water pump, hew head gasket, new fluids, new valve cover gasket set, new exhaust manifold gasket, and new intake manifold gasket.... so yeah... it adds up!! you could do it half assed and just get the head gasket and hope for the best, but that's just ignorant.
