B16a complete swap
B18(A or B) complete swap
H22A complete swap

Into a gen5 hatch..

Which would be the best way to go?

Go with the h22 total monster i stopped by ksr today and guess what i saw that's right a h22 being dropped into i believe it was either a 97 or 98 civic hatchback. That's a total sleeper that thing will destroy the competition on the street

It's all up to you man, what do you wnt to achieve ?? Do you wanta 1/4 mile car than get am h22 If you wanta bit of both handling and everyday driving go with the b18 and if i were you honestly for a regular everyday driver i would go with a b16 or b17 a bit less on power but the handling will still be good and it is a very common swap I'm not to sure about the price of the b18 swap but ihear that is a good combo too 5 gen and a b18, normally your budget will guide you good luck and let us know what you decide

well i drove a 97 civic from osaka in montreal with a h22...did it ever go.. no rev limiter no speed limiter...the vtech was pretty strong...now the engine itself is not very expensive you can pick one up for about 2000 to 3000 conmplete....if you are putting it into a 92 95 civic you are better of by buying the hasport mounts which go for about $700 usd shipped to your house.....so you are looking at about a max5000 dollar sick killer 200hp swap..i dont know how it will do for under and over steer since i just drove it hard in a straigh line but it handle pretty good......

Where the **** do you get complete H22A swaps for $2-3K? Is it at www.stolenhondaengines.com?? They're like $4000+ USD plus the swap kit!! And it handled pretty good...for a straight line, right? It's an extra 300 lbs over a D series I think...not a good place to put 300 lbs. Besides, you should really get softer than normal springs for the front, and maybe a little harder in the back. I know this goes against intuition, but stiffer end goes into the guardrail first...so with a heavy engine, you need to allow for a little more weight transfer. But that's something that needs to be figured out at a later time. B20VTECs are A LOT OF MONEY TO BUILD....and it's not really a "complete swap" as ppl picture it. It involves machine work and a new bottom end. B17A crank and custom rods/pistons from endyn...The Old One.

NON RECOMENDED SWAP
H22A (Prelude VTEC) in any Civic/CRX/Integra
The H22A engine leans in the wrong direction
Civic engines have blocks that lean forward while the H22A block leans backwards, towards the firewall. Even though custom fabrication will mount engine, it's still not suitable for this chassis.
Fabrication issues
Custom fabrication is required to get the H22 engine to fit. The stock motor mounts have to be removed and new mounts relocated, making this an expensive job. Modern day cars are designed from the ground up as an integrated structure, and this includes the engine. Moving mounts around causes the structural characteristics to change. Furthermore, it also increases the chance of a screwup happening.
Chronic understeer
The heavy load up front will cause tons of understeer. Furthermore, the added power up front will cause the front end to lose traction too easily. What you have is a car that goes fast, only in a straight line.
