I took it in to Crappy Tire, and that is exactly what it is. They say it's going to cost me $850 to fix it!!! . Does this sound right? Is there anything else I can do? Is this problem damaging my car?

They said it's so expensive b/c they have to replace the whole thing, new O2 sensors, etc. Is this true? Please help...

a local mechanic just recommended that too. Do you know if the manifold is steel or cast iron? I guess you can't weld cast...

I think its steel, my dads friend had no problems welding it together.

Yep, that's where mine is cracked too. Since mine isn't steel though, it can't be welded.

On the bright side, I bought my car used not too long ago, and Canadian Tire (another location) did the safety on it. It turns out that the safety comes with a 36-day warranty which says that if anything was overlooked or goes wrong, they have to fix it free-of-charge. I brought it to them today (the 36th day!) and told them this. The guy we talked to didn't know what to do, but said to go there tomorrow when the manager would be in (oddly enough, the manager was the one who did the safety on my car). Since the other CT gave me a quote on what was wrong and how to fix it on the 35th day (yesterday) he said that I should be fine. Soooo, I'm going there bright and early tomorrow morning to see if I can get this fixed under the warranty. That would save my butt $850!! If this goes through for me, I'll be extremely happy. As for now, I just have to cross my fingers

I guess this is a MTO-enforced rule, so I'm hoping that will give me some leverage...

Alright guys, we have a new chapter; the story continues.

I went to CT and told them my situation. The guy said he would take a look at it and then get back to me. This was a step.

A couple hours later, I get a call from him saying, "OK, everything is good to go, it isn't making a sound anymore." Hmm, aren't they supposed to call you first and let you know what's going on? That's what I thought. So I asked him what he did. "Well, we welded it and it isn't making anymore noise. All the ministry says is that the sound cannot be noticeable. Anything beyond that is between you and the seller." Well, there is a positive and a negative to this. +, I can't hear the sound (at first). -, He didn't "fix" it and he was kind of a b**** about it.

So, I called my uncle (mechanic) and told him about this. He told me to drive to Mississauga so he could check it out. On my way there, I could still hear a very faint hum, so I knew they didn't do a very good job. I got there, and when he and the other mechanic at the shop checked it out, they found about 4 other blatent things that had been missed on the safety. They also could still hear the crack. I forget what the other problem parts were called (don't have the paper here), but there were cracks in the plastic 'caps' that are near the wheels, and the rear left brake drum had a piece missing from the vent.

Moving on, my uncle's shop did a safety inspection and told me to bring it to the MTO. From there, they will do an inspection to see if what I am claiming is legitimate. If they think it is, then they will go to CT and tell them that they have to fix everything that is wrong... for free.

So, I called the MTO today, but the Enforcements lady isn't in until tomorrow morning. I'm going to call then and see how it goes. Everyone keep your fingers crossed for me and hope this all gets sorted out!

To add to CT's annoyance. They removed the heat shield from underneith my car and left it off without even telling me :s. I know it isn't a big deal to leave it off, but they didn't even notify me of it. I hope this will add to the ministry taking my side.

I'll keep you guys posted...

I had to because they are the ones that the seller brought the car to for the safety inspection...

Horrible news. The Enforcements woman said that they could do an inspection and if they find something wrong, charge CT, but I would still have to pay for anything they find. The only way I could get it from CT is if I take the MTO's charges to civil court and try to fight CT. That is just rediculous, I don't have the money for that.

In other words, never let the seller do the safety inspection for you. Take the car to a mechanic you trust. I can't believe this bastard ripped me off like that. To make it worse, he was an old friend of my mom's. He probably knew the guy at CT and now I'm out of luck.
