engine getting turbo'd...questions

alrighty, well i am getting my turbonetics kit installed in about 10 days (hopefully earlier if shipping is quick) and i was wondering a few things before it gets done...

my compression of my ls engine was 180, 175, 160, 180 . how good is that compression in terms of having the engine last a while with the turbo on it?

also, i think i may run it at 4lbs or 5 over winter just to make sure i don't push it too hard before summer comes....so should that be alright for having the engine last over winter?

and another question, what kinda precautions should i use in terms of maintaining the kit/engine over winter?

and just fyi, the ecu is getting chipped with crome and it will be street tuned....

^^^ hahahahaha, is it the compression numbers that make it a mess?

lol

ya, thats kinda the idea though, like, i want it to last at low boost through winter but the ls engine is so cheap for a long block anyways its not the end of the world if i need to get a new one...=D

who wants to take bets on how long this one lasts? haha

Does the wastegate in the kit come with a 4 or 5 psi spring (most kits come with a 7psi spring)? If not how do you plan on only running 4-5psi?

Make sure to get a higher volume fuel pump, bigger injectors, colder spark plugs, and do something about the pcv system, like as a bare minimum unhook the pcv valve (so it doesn't let boost into the crankcase), but i would run a catch can or krank vent mini system.

Happy boostin.

Honestly man.. don't be a pansy, 4-5psi?

Boost that **** to 10psi untill it blows. Might as well have fun with it untill it blows

IMO you have 2 choices:

1: Boost the living snot out of it till it goes hiroshima...

2: Take the time to build the motor to handle it first, then boost the living snot out of it...

or make a daily journal

day #2 of turbo: excessive smoke and lound knocking sound.

continued of day #2: just got home, the tow truck driver was pretty nice though he laughed when he saw the hole in the block.

day #3: thinkin about posting on tcc that my engine blew, but they told me so and I dont wanna get "pwn3d" maybe I'll go curl in a ball and cry for a bit

LOL>..now i am just wondering if everyone is actually serious that it will blow that easily?......also, with some "educated" answers can someone explain how its going to be so unbelievably unreliable based on the opinions so far....lol

you think we're joking?

Just put the kit on and find out for yourself.
If you've got the cash to boost your engine, make sure you've got the cash to fix stuff when it brakes and do the necessary upgrades to your tires/brakes/clutch/suspension/etc.

first off you guy's are homo's his motor wont' blow unless he has no engine management....get it tuned on crome or similar system run 5-7 pounds and watch your clutch go up in smoke over the course of a few days, replace clutch add oil every few weeks (160 psi in one cylinder) and you will be fine

tune it to 260-280 whp wake the turbo up abit (big turbos dont' like 5 psi) (have proper injectors supporting mods etc) boost till it gernades

either way you have to get it tuned on something good

you can blow your motor running 4-5 psi and you can run 300 whp on your stock block and not have it blow tuning and driving habits play more a role until you reach the limits or your block

i am pretty sure you can find some really good FAQs out there that can give you all the answers.

But buddy up there is right, YOU WILL NEED PROPER TUNING!!! and get the right parts to run more fuel.

I am in your situation kind of right now, but...i have all my parts ready (turbo kit, intercooler kit, p28 with crome, blah blah) and i just got my block back, its fully built for boost. I mean if you are going to spend all that money on the kit...it would be a waste to not use it to its potential.

If you are saying buying another block is cheap than go out and buy a block, some forged pistons rods, sleeve it if you want, but just build it before you throw on the turbo.

just boost it 5 psi,, when it blows it blows,, im in the same situation i have b16 one cylinder has lower compression too, gonna install turbo in the spring..

Theres many places in toronto where u can get b16 long blocks for like 600-700 bucks,, ls motors for alot cheaper..
