emergency!!!
Anyone have a spring compressor other then the gay crappy kind that crappy tire rents out. They aren't working with my shocks, the things that grab on to the spring are totally in the way of the shock and I can't center them to re-assemble them properly. anyone?@!#@!#?@!?

is the main problem the centering of the spring?? if so my one spring is off... its not rubbing anything so i just dont worry about it....although if it was off by a lot then i'd worry about it....
what springs are you installing anyways?? i didn't even need the compressor for my nuespeeds

re-installing stock suspension to sell my KYB's and then buy my illuminas and put my eibachs back in with them in the spring. The problem is centering but at the same time the hook things that grab the spring are in the way so you can't even adjust how the shock sits and therefore i cant get the seat or whatever its called onto the shock. What was the process you used when you did yours. Like...how far apart were the hooks from each other? and did you tighten one side and then tighten the other side after?

I thought you needed my help doing this? oh well looks like you got yourself in trouble
heres a trick
put the whole assembly back ont he car and place a jack under the bottom of the shock and pump the jack and guide the threaded rod through the top hat (which is still attached to the car) then tighten it from inside the car, undue the top hat and voila you made your own spring compressor.
slight warnign through if you use a small jack block it so it wont move, because it can move and spring will fly out

ummmm not sure if we had the same one.... mine had U bolts that went around a coil... .which connected to a long bolt.... tighten the bolt compress the spring....
once i had it all compressed within the assembly though i just tried to release both of the large bolts slowly and usually it comes out ok.. like i said one didn't and i didn't have the motivation to fix it but no problems either....

ummm i put them as far as i possibly could.... i think it was 4 coils.... but i found it just barely compressed them enough.... i didn't have air tools either though.... just a 2 foot wrench and a 2 foot ratched.... lots o torque....

I also used the CT spring compressor on a few occasion and while its annoying to use I got it to work.
ON my very last install i tried it and for some reason it was slipping and the spring went sideways each time so I gave up and di my trick for all 4 spring assemblies, worked a beauty
since them for xmas i got a new spring compressor that has a hook style not the U clamps like the CT rental one.

I think your problem is that your hooking the compressor on too high and too low on the spring... all you need to compress is about 4-5 coils in the center...that should be enough to get the hat on... its super easy just play with it more, you'll get it
hope that helps..
A pic of the tool would allow us to explain or say if it work or not at least/ proper compressor

Matt's trick works perfect too. My car was the guineu(sp) pig. It was easier then using the compressor. Those CT compressor suck. When Matt and I were trying to compress my springs, the thing wouldn't stay aligned, and the spring was twisting all over the place.
