Driving B16 (vtec)

How should you drive your B16 or B18 vtec engine?
How long or how often should you go into vtec?
Where ahould your limits/borders be?

The G2 Racer 07-Nov-2003 01:24 AM

There are no limits. But if you want to treat it nicely you should only rev into vtec a few times a week.

Limits, don't sit on the rev limiter....lol...always a bad thing.

BIGA10k 07-Nov-2003 06:44 AM

Take it into vtec as often as you can afford to fill up your gas tank and change you oil with good synthetic. These motors are meant to rev high. I try to keep my motor in vtec as often as I can - it's more fun that way. If you don't plan on enjoy vtec for what it's worth then run a non-vtec motor with more torque.

I agree with The G2 Racer. I really don't think its good for the engine if your always hitting the VTEC.

Anyhow my opinion

imported_Torrey 07-Nov-2003 08:36 AM

You guys are talking as if the B16a is a SR20DET or RB motor....

You won't blow it by hitting vtec all the time, if you know anything about the internals, this motor loves the high revs.

Nothing to lose any sleep over.

Alekss 07-Nov-2003 09:59 AM

Now that u mentioned Internals.
If I decided to put a JR Supercharger ... how many PSI can stock B16 (so stock internals) handle without any problems.
How much potential is there in B16

The G2 Racer 07-Nov-2003 11:24 AM

Lots of potentnal. I wouldn't run more then 9 pounds on stock internals though.
Also I'd do a turbo, you'll get better gains. If you want a blower, Vortech, imo.

bbarbulo 07-Nov-2003 11:26 AM

prolonged high rpm operation can lead to valvetrain damage, bent con-rods, or in case of valve float can cause piston to valve contact.

no engine is bulletproof... don't fool yourself into thinking you can beat on it and nothing will happen. engines can be DRIVEN, not beat. I mean, don't boot from light to light knowing you'll only encounter a red light 3 seconds later. if you wanna go fast, take to to just around redline, row through each gear with precision and take each gear to redline. don't skip gears, and don't do a 100 in 2nd gear for 3 minutes or something stupid like that. choose a gear that best corresponds to your driving needs. don't rev a cold engine past 3500 rpm, don't floor it in like 5th gear at low rpm, basically practice good common sense.

UlTiMoDrAgGiN 07-Nov-2003 06:43 PM

that is so true. my cousin has a US spec Si, a SiR to you guys, and he would kick its ass all around town, and in like 3 years it was pretty much toasted. its all good cuz he planned on a ITR engine swap anyhow.

blk93si 08-Nov-2003 11:51 PM

Vtec :yummy: i use it all the time :D

Nova_Dust 09-Nov-2003 12:55 AM

I have no vtec, I consider myself a less fortunate... LOL

I Feel Ur Pain Nova_Dust.....lol I'm In The Same Boat.....

saturn_one 09-Nov-2003 01:25 PM

I usually drive around 4000-6000 unless i'm trying to kick someones ass! is 6000 to much? considering the red line is at 8?

Alekss 09-Nov-2003 02:29 PM

well if u go from 4-6k rpm that means u go into VTEC but not for long...thats not good for the engine is it/

BIGA10k 09-Nov-2003 08:34 PM

bbarbulo has some good comments. keep your engine well maintained and don't beat the crap out of the motor and you'll be fine. b16's and b18's have high limits. Honda has warranty's to uphold and would never set the redline anywhere near the limits.

Vtec should not be treated like a redline. as bbarbulo said, if you want to go fast, take it to redline, then smoothly row through the gears.

imported_BoOsTd 09-Nov-2003 09:05 PM

its good to rev high at least once per drive... keeps the engine clean, and inturn you get better daily mileage :D But hiting fuel cutoff all the time cant be good seeing as the engine instantly leans out..

BIGA10k 09-Nov-2003 09:20 PM

who said anything about fuel cutoff?

shlammed 10-Nov-2003 07:42 PM

if driving in vtec was a bad thing it wouldnt exist now would it

BIGA10k 10-Nov-2003 08:18 PM

exactly. think of vtec as being a performance cam with good low-end driveability. the non-vtec cam lobe is for when you're not driving the car and stuck in traffic.
