Take it into vtec as often as you can afford to fill up your gas tank and change you oil with good synthetic. These motors are meant to rev high. I try to keep my motor in vtec as often as I can - it's more fun that way. If you don't plan on enjoy vtec for what it's worth then run a non-vtec motor with more torque.

You guys are talking as if the B16a is a SR20DET or RB motor....
You won't blow it by hitting vtec all the time, if you know anything about the internals, this motor loves the high revs.
Nothing to lose any sleep over.

prolonged high rpm operation can lead to valvetrain damage, bent con-rods, or in case of valve float can cause piston to valve contact.
no engine is bulletproof... don't fool yourself into thinking you can beat on it and nothing will happen. engines can be DRIVEN, not beat. I mean, don't boot from light to light knowing you'll only encounter a red light 3 seconds later. if you wanna go fast, take to to just around redline, row through each gear with precision and take each gear to redline. don't skip gears, and don't do a 100 in 2nd gear for 3 minutes or something stupid like that. choose a gear that best corresponds to your driving needs. don't rev a cold engine past 3500 rpm, don't floor it in like 5th gear at low rpm, basically practice good common sense.

that is so true. my cousin has a US spec Si, a SiR to you guys, and he would kick its *** all around town, and in like 3 years it was pretty much toasted. its all good cuz he planned on a ITR engine swap anyhow.

bbarbulo has some good comments. keep your engine well maintained and don't beat the crap out of the motor and you'll be fine. b16's and b18's have high limits. Honda has warranty's to uphold and would never set the redline anywhere near the limits.
Vtec should not be treated like a redline. as bbarbulo said, if you want to go fast, take it to redline, then smoothly row through the gears.

its good to rev high at least once per drive... keeps the engine clean, and inturn you get better daily mileage But hiting fuel cutoff all the time cant be good seeing as the engine instantly leans out..

exactly. think of vtec as being a performance cam with good low-end driveability. the non-vtec cam lobe is for when you're not driving the car and stuck in traffic.
