DOT 3 vs DOT 4

Heard DOT 4 has a higher boiling point. Is there any other benifit to using DOT 4 besides that?

I don't think I've ever boiled DOT 3 on the street.

Yikes really? I heard it can damage your components!

Whiplash 14-Oct-2002 03:02 PM

my dad's been using it on his '66 T-Bird for a few years..
guy at work has it in his old Vette..
another at work uses in his "Lambo'd" Fiero..
i used it in my bike..

news to me..but i'll be switching over the Si when it comes time..

Whiplash 14-Oct-2002 03:04 PM

oh..and don't take my word for it..

they're talking about brake fluid :nods:

the higher the DOT generally means a higher boiling point, thus meaning less brake fade under hard braking conditions :)

Ive had the fluid boil aright. Its dot 3 I think. My friend had it done and he said he highly rocomends it.

Once you get into DOT 5 you usually have to change the brake lines to stainless steel or something that will be able to withstand the heat..

imported_echien 15-Oct-2002 06:35 AM

So if I haven't experienced fluid boiling over than is there any other performance improvment in upgrading?

imported_JookSingKid 15-Oct-2002 12:09 PM

Ford Brake Fluid serves many, quite well

dunno, what are the compression ratings on 3 and 4??
if one has a greater compression point then it'll be more effective when really laying into the brakes..(hydraulic power..)

and ya KSR is right on the money..
stainless!!
but it's not that expensive

dot 4 doesnt soak up as much moistuire as dot 3 and therefore doesnt rust the brake linbes from the inside out as quick.
