DOHC ZC engine vs. SOHC D16Z6 / 7
Is there much diff between these engines, besides a small amount of HP. Are there any price diff.?
What about reliability, i heard the ZC are older and less relibale. any input thanks. |
I'm not sure about the ZC, the people who have them love em but I've heard that they do have problems.. I have the SOHC VTEC swapped in and I love it. whne that VTEC kicks in it just puts a huge smile across my face :D
|
whats the price installed for the SOHC vtec? Is it similar to the ZC price?
Also, in a 4th gen, how much extra wiring is needed to runt he vtec? |
Ask Dented DX about ZC opinions...
I do believe that he still needs an ECU though.... |
the zc is reliable, like every engine, just keep it well maintained, i've loved it since i got one in my crx , you can pick up a zc for about $650, the price of the sohc vtec is a little more, my buddy is doing one for his crx right now so i'll see how much he paid
|
the zc is very reliable, much more reliable than the d16, those motors are **** and slow. and parts for the zc is not that expensive and they are not hard to find at all.

KSR swapped in my D16z6 for $700 without the ecu or harness. He hooked up VTEC with a switch so that when I am at full throttle VYEC comes on which means that I dont have the wait for that 5500 VTEC limti to kick in. I usually get VTEC at about 4000rpm..

As you know, i have the d16z6 engine in my 4th gen hatch. The engine cost me 750 after tax. I did the install myself over the weekend. I had a dx hatch so the wiring is a bit more extensive than with the si. But i wouldn't say it was hard. There are a million step by step instructions on the web for the sohc vtec swap. Unfortunately, i am currently having some reliability issues with my engine. But that because i've tuned my piggy back computer to run a bit rich.
I picked the SOHC over the ZC cause at the time (about 1.5 years ago), the ZC cost much more than the SOHC engine. I have no complaints except that when the vtec comes in, its not that much of a difference. I would stay away from the bseries engines for the 4th gen civics only cause the mounts cost so damn much. One can get a b series LS block for about the same price as a set of b series conversion mounts. Friggen rip off if you ask me. But if you ever get a good deal on the b series mounts, I would definately go with a b series engine. |
i love the zc, i would go with the zc because once it is installed properly one has no complaints, it is powerful and can produce a smile on anyones face.

d16z6 all the way..... 240 000kms and still going strong with no major problems
|
I thought I'd just add a little input...
From what I've seen, there are Single Cam non-vtec motors, that when properly built will make B16As cry. so don't write off the singel cam non-vtec motor either. I have seen one measure 130 lbs/ft at the wheels. |
thats so true... i've done tons of research into what the d series can do.... someone in the states built a d16z6 with turbo/intercool that made 240 someodd hp at the wheels.... i saw that one a while ago but he had a dyno sheet for it....
imagine dusting a vette and poping the hood to only see one cam and no dohc vtec on the valve cover..... |

Here's one I found of this guy making 220whp 202ft/lbs using a turbo kit with 14psi of boost on a D16 with stock internals! Dyno to prove. Very streetable! 6-8psi daily pushing 180whp and at the track cranking it up to 14psi of boost! I guess I should follow the rest and do a B16 swap huh?:p http://forums.civicland.com/viewtopi...orum=7&start=0 |

I hate to quote myself but...

i just think the d16b is a complete waste of money doing up, just spend $800 put a zc in your car and modify it as you would with a D16 and you'll have much more power. That's what i would do anyway it's all up to you and your project you want to build.

always one in the bunch

You'd have to see it action in order really be excited about it |
