d16y7 sounds like diesel

Yesterday i noticed that theres a very loud rattling coming from my d16y7 engine. The noise comes on around 3000rpm and sounds like a de-tuned diesel engine. The noise sounds like its coming from the head area. Could it be the valves?

The engine only has 125km so its still low.

I dont think it ever had a valve adjustment done on it, well not since i got the car 2 years ago.

You mean Exhaust leak in the cylinder??? would a compression test determine if this was the case?

Could be an Exhuast leak in
a)Cylinder head to manifold/cat
b)cracked exhuast manifold

An compression test will not verify the presence of an exhuast leak.

Remove the heat shield on the top of your exhuast manifold. Considering you have a 6 year old car with 120K+ KM on it it's a good bet that your manifold as cracked(b.). It's a common problem with the d16y7 engine as many people here can attest to.

If you manifold is cracked it is possible that it will be warrantied by Honda Canada. Search for threads on "cracked exhuast manifold" to aid yourself. Good luck.

Thanks for the info trackhack i checked the exhaust manifold but cant find any cracks in it. I read up on it and apperantly its a bad design thats a reaccuring problem with the y7. Im going to call Honda tomorrow to try to find out about the extended warranty on exhaust (8 year or 130km on the 3 way cat converter) and maybe they can replace it. Is it ok to drive around like that or is there going to be any damage to the engine?

Ive been hearing this lately with my d16z6... but after a while driving it goes away... its on the right side of the engine. Could this be the same prob?

ManikOne it sounds like you're hearing piston slap, and I say that cuz you say it goes away after a while.

Piranha, 3000 rpm noise would suggest it was something other than a cracked manifold, although that was a good thought. But I figure a cracked manifold you should be able to hear even at idle.

Check the manifold just in case, cuz quite frankly that is the cheapest possible problem in this case. Otherwise, you're possibly looking at a teardown and rebuild for this bad boy.

yeah, drain the oil and check to see if there are lots of metal shavings.
My buddy just spun a rod bearing and his engine sounded like all hell was breaking loose at about 3000rpm, when we drained the oil there was tonnes of metal shavings. We figure its because a vtec oil pump wasn't used on his b20vtec, or maybe b/c the oil level was low and he does beat on it pretty good.
