d16 running wierd
my civic just got out of the shop and im taking it for a cruise, but it seems like whenever im cruising at like 60 and try to accellerate the car doesnt respond to when i push on the gas and when it finally does respond to the pedal my car accellerates very quickly and abruptly. This also happens in first gear while easing off the clutch i have no clue whats going on and i need some help!
help me. |
when crusing at 60 do you downshift before trying to accel. like if im crusing at 60 id drop it in to 2nd and ill have lots of power rather than flooring it in 4th
|
was it doing this before it went to the shop?
if not.. why was it in the shop? |
before it was in the shop it was sitting in my garage for 5 months, i got a tune up.
no i dont down shift i leave it in 3rd and accell and it doesnt respond to the pressur on the pedal until the pedal is floored then the car just takes off i dont get it? |
does it bog or misfire under part throttle. does it try to accelerate but have no power? you need a better description... how does it rev with no load? is the condition the same when the engine is cold/warm?
|
sounds to me like you need a new o2 sensor. that ones for you chris_si98 thought youd get a laugh out of it... anyways im just kidding
|
well.. since you haven't really gave a good description i'd pull the plugs to see how the fuel delievery is.
Check ignition timing. I'd be even tempting to check your TPS. Place a paper clip into I believe its the red and green pin in the back of the harness clip. Connect a voltmeter to both probes. Have a friend push down the throttle lightly. The voltmeter should read around 0.5V at no throttle.. and slowly rise as the throttle is depressed. When its at WOT it should be around 4.5V. If you don't have a friend who can do this.. you can always just do it manually on the throttle plate, but it gets a bit tricky while hoding the probes/voltmeter, etc. And if you dont get a signal from the red/green, try the red/black (i forget which two wires it is) Once again.. its probably not your tps, but without a good description I can't eliminate it from what could be wrong. |
bog is the perfect word to explain it, i put it in first and when pushing on the gas i hear a bogging noise and the car doesnt accelerate.
since it doesnt accelerate i push further on the gas in first and end up doing burn outs. Pretty much what bbarbulo described happens. |
sounds like you are running rich then. See any black smoke?
Hows your gas mileage? Pull your plugs to confirm. Then start diagnosising weither its weak spark or faulty fuel delievery |
my gas mileage on my last fill up for 20bux was like 240 kms, havent seen any smoke, i was thinking it may be an exhaust leak????
|
To record your gas mileage take note of the kilometers you have done and how many liters it took to fill up.
So if you did 400 kilometers and it took 33L to fill up then your avg is about 8.2 liters per 100 Kilometers. Also, pull your plugs like chris_si98 said and check to see th condition. this website should help http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/engine/plugs.html My D16 is also doing the same, I think my timing is advanced but I dont have to the tools to check. |
is your car automatic?
couldn't the problem be the Throttle position sensor? |
nah my cars stick, it feels like when i push on the gas im losing power until i floor the pedal then she just takes off lol

umm.....first of all, our cars don't have a Mass Air Flow, they have a Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor (MAP) and it certainly DOES NOT get ignored at WOT. If it did, how the hell would the ecu know how much fuel to deliver? Without a MAP sensor the car runs like ass (if at all) and will get literally 200kms to a full tank of gas. I know b/c this one b20vtec i tuned ran like crap when i first got there and he said he was getting 200kms to a full tank of gas, driving like a gramma. Then i noticed that his MAP sensor wasn't hooked up, problem solved.
Do as people have suggested already, check your spark plugs, check your ignition timing, check your fuel pressure....or take it to someone that knows hondas, or back to the shop you had it at before. |
sounds to me that maybe your clutch is slipping.
You said it happens in first gear too when letting off the clutch? Does it just rev up and not move for a second? |

So getting 350km/tank with a 98 dx hatch could actually be a MAP problem(a bit off topic)?? friend has a 98 dex, gets 350km to a full tank its auto too, I don't think the there is a 200-250km diff going from 5spd-auto |
i gaurantee that the MAP sensor DOES NOT get ignored at WOT. I've literally watched the MAP sensor reading (in the datalogger) while tuning and doing WOT pulls, its not ignored. Having a chipped ecu doesn't matter either, there is no way to disable the MAP sensor when chipping an ecu (like how you can disable the o2 or knock sensor in crome when burning a chip).
MAP and MAF's definately work different, i don't know why an ecu would not look for a MAF reading at WOT. I mean, the ecu still needs to measure the amount of air going into the engine. The o2 sensor is ignored (the ecu goes into open loop) at anything over 80% throttle on our hondas. |

well it actually sounds to me like you're describing a misfire under high load. I would start by checking your distributor cap and rotor, plus wires and plugs. those are the most likely culprits. it doesn't sound like clutch slip, since you say you hit the gas and end up doing burnouts lol ... doesn't sound like a clutch problem at all.
