cost for rear brake job - 98 civic

Has anyone recently replaced their rear brakes on a 98 Civic sedan?? If so, wherre and how much?? I have 81K on the odo and think that it may be time.. I would prefer to go to either Midas or Speedy due to the lifetime warranty unless someone can convince me otherwise.

I live near Yorkdale so somewhere close would be great!
Thanks,
MG

i have 4 wheel disk brakes... i guess if your driving a sedan then you get the joys of drums...

i've never taken a drum appart but if anything it would be cheaper in labour i think?

WAIT!!!!!!!

Don't, I Repeat DONT BUY THE SPEEDY BRAKE SHOES!!!! Buy the stock Honda ones....the lifetime warranty thing is a crock! Yes, the pads are warrantied for life...no problem there...BUT what they fail to mention that the pads have such a high metallic content that they EAT drums and rotors alive!

On another note: I doubt your pads need to be replaced as of yet...most likely all you need is a brake adjustment. Let me guess: the brake pedal feels as though it is going really low right? Before buying new pads, Id check things out first...you may just need a brake service (clean out brake dust, lube everything, adjust the rear brakes, remove rust from drum).

That would be my guess cause I have rarely seen a 98 civic with 80k km on it needing rear shoes.

thanks for the reply...the reason why I think that I might need new rear brakes is not because the pedal feels soft but rather that there is a squeaking noise from the rear...when I push the pedal, there is a high-pitched squeak coming from the rear brakes..the same noise appears when I lift the handbrake up and down...

I am hoping that it is just some springs or something that need lubing and not new parts..

if you have a build-up of excess brake dust that can cause the squealing...It could also be rust build up around the outer perimerter of the drum....The only way to know for sure would be to take off your drums

man your rear drums/shoes should last for at least 120,000km...I got 160,000 km before my drumms were even opened since factory...

unless you drove around town with the ebrake on or sometheing... Im bet is that they just need to be cleaned and serviced... they are self adjusting if I remember correctly...

they arent self adjusting....you have to turn the screw inside the drum brake assembly....the best way to see if they are out of adjustment is to pull up on the handbrake...if it goes more than 4-6 clicks, then they need to be adjusted...if it is within that range, all you need is a service
