clutch or tranny problem?

so basically everything was good on my car up until yesterday morning when i was driving home from burlington...

basically the clutch stopped working all together. there would be resistance on the clutch petal but not as much as usual...

so i get it home with no clutch and check the clutch fluid and its a little low but nothing too low... so i top if up anyways...

problem persists... i checked under the car so see if the slave cylinder might be leaking or something... and there was a 6" puddle under the car... so i left it at that cause thanksgiving dinner was soon..

so i just checked out the location of the leak... its coming from the seal between the engine and tranny there is much more fluid down there now...

so i started it up to see if i had a car for the week or was renting one... so it starts... engine is fine... then i push in the clutch to put it in first and it goes normal... try other gears and they all work... so that makes me think the clutch is fine... so i put it in reverse and see how that works and its ok... so i reverse maybe 6 feet stop and put it in nuetral let the clutch out and there is the dirtiest noise ever... goes away when the clutch is in though...

and after that when you put the clutch in and try to put it in a gear no dice... the noise is quite loud as well...

my only thoughts is that the input shaft took a turn for the worse maybe?

Sounds like one of the spings in the clutch plate has come out wedging itself in there causing all those problems

well an input shaft doens't usually just stop working like you mention

unless your leaving something out

you cant just be driving along, and woop, theres goes my input shaft, unless you like downshifted hard or did soemthing real bad to the tranny... sounds more like a clutch issue

sounds exactly what happend to my clutch

even though there was no signs of anything wrong on the clutch itself, it did some of the same symptoms except make noise

swapped it and all is well

I dunno... I'm thinking rear main seal, perhaps spilling enough oil onto the clutch to contaminate it? or ?? it really has to get taken apart and looked at. Not one of those things you can just guess easily.

Rear main seal... I bet that the rear main crank seal is pinched and its been leaking oil onto your clutch..

I just had the same prob with my car - but it wasnt that bad and i was replacing the clutch anyways.

Is it oil or tranny fluid on the ground?

sounds like the seal
drop that tranny out and check for leaks
d-series trannies are cheap (if that's what you have), so dont worry too much

well its not motor oil cause i haven't lost any... so it could be clutch fluid which i've been loosing lately or tranny fluid really...

also if oil was leaking onto my clutch it would slip no? i haven't noticed any slippage of the clutch at all...

for a little update the clutch now slips severly... any more then part throttle will make in slip... and the leaking continues... hopefully its tranny fluid and not motor oil though

hard to say man... but to be honest, I think the clutch area and the tranny fluid area are totally separate... save for the input shaft?? maybe

i wonder if your rear main is leaking, causing oil all over the clutch to build up, why dump more money into that damn D series!

You need to get a new bank and check out some swap deals on ebay, there are some really good packages out there.

i dont think its engine oil cause the dip stick hasn't shown any losses since sunday so hopefully its the tranny...

considering the plethora of issues involved in shifting now though i'm hopeful

and like i said above the reason i'm putting more money into the d series is cause the bank wont let me do more... its only going to cost a couple hundred anyways so its not like its a fortune

for a little update

it was 100% the input shaft... it had a lot of play and thats where all the leak came from and driveability problems came from... rear main seal on the motor is in tact so that was a huge relief...

so i got my y8 tranny in and a new clutch (the used one i got with the tranny was pooched) and everything is rockin again... its so nice to be sporting Si gears again
