Car tends to shut-down. Why......?
Hi.
My 92 Cavalier tends to shut-down, while the engine is running and car comes to a stop (intersections, traffic lights, stop signs for instance).
I changed the plugs ( they had to be changed...) and pour a fuel injector cleaner in the tank. Fuel and Air filter have been changed recently, along with the battery, alt and other stuff. Oil is good and ignition wires didn't seem to be cracked...
So what could it be? The engine struggles to stay on and comes-in and goes-out if you know what I mean....

And thats exactly it! It starves at idle. But why? How can I fix it?

IAC is the Idle air control valve....it basically acts as a bypass to the throttle plate when your foot is off the gas....the best way to fix it is to buy a new one....chances are, the one thats in your car is NFG cause if it was sticking, the idle would be "searching" up and down...the fact that it completely dies tells me that your IAC is stuck shut.....dont quote me on this, but its a likely problem

IACV wouldn't do that. it responds to other inputs... so if it responds at all, it means it's working. the surging idle means it's responding. other than cleaining and resetting the pintle, I think you're okay. I'd check the other inputs.

the idle wouldnt search if it was the MAP sensor...and if Im not mistaken, dont cavaliers run mass air flow sensors? Anyways, if the IACV was dirty to the point that it becomes sluggish, the idle will search, as the IACV is slow to responding to the inputs...therefore, because the IACV is sluggish, it is playing catchup constantly at idle....hence the searching or surging idle...So that would be the first place id check....clean up your IACV and see if that cures the problem

Well, the newest thing is that the engine "SEARCHES" while I give it gas, and when I come to a complete stop, it shuts-off...
Are you sure about this? Should I go to CT and buy one of these (if they have one) and put it in? You have an idea were this sensor might be?
Man this Cavalier has such Weired engine bay design! Nothing is easy to access and you can't even see the distributor...:fustrated

sent you a PM.
I'm 100, no, I'm 200% sure!
Trust me, I replaced every flippin sensor on my Cavalier, as well as filters, fluids, fuel pressure regulator valve, pcv valve, spark plugs, wires, ignition coil packs, shift module... you name it!!!
None of the above helped. It is the lock up torque convertor sensor.

(I even went to a mechanic and he told me it was that the intake manifold and head gaskets were leaking... and the fuel pressure regulator valve needed to be replaced... well, no, no, and no. )
