BIG PROBLEM-OIL in Antrifreeze
Aight so Im driving and somethings not right. Check my antifreeze and its totally low and theres OIL !!!(residue) So I thought my headgasket is gone. I was told my I need my head machined. So what do I do?!!?!?!

NO the car is sittin in the driveway. Can I just buy a new head ?

you pull the head, replace the headgasket, head bolts, thermostat, waterpump, timing belt.... have the head machined, check the deck for flatness, and flush the rad and block out really well with soap and water for hella long time. oil in coolant makes the thermostat fail, so make sure you flush it all out really well.

IM not a mechanic though...keep it mind IM gonna have to pay to get this stuff done. HOw much can I get it done for?

five bills to change a head gasket.... generally speaking, and assuming you didn't do any other damage.

my friend at work had the same problem but with him the story was that his younger brother filled it with oil for some weird ass reason... |

well it depends on a few things.
If the machine shop can inspect/clean/mill the head in a day, and there aren't any other problems found, it should be able to be done in an afternoon. If the machine shop is busy it could take a couple of days to get the head back. But it only takes 3-5 hours to change a headgasket on a d-series. I would recommend doing as bbarbulo says and changing the water pump, t-belt and thermostat at the same time, while its all apart. |
It's a B16a2.
I got the swap done 3 months ago. At the time all this happened my temperature guage was not working. I got a DX cluster to see if the car is over heating. to my surprise it is not over heating, and there isn't actual oil in the radiator, it was in the resevoir bottle ...but it was like only oil residue. I'm not sure if the head gasket is gone. The temperature was exactly where it should be. Any other thoughts or can the gasket still be bad if my temperature is fine. |

open the rad cap when it isn't warm. Let it warm. See if there's any bubbling on top of the rad. If there is bubble u know that the headgasket has a leak. If there isn't bubble it could be other things. If u say there is antifreeze inside the oil, like when u drain the oil, it will be like a milky colour then u know most likely it is the headgasket. How would antifreeze get into the oil? That's most likely the problem. Your car will overheat when u lose coolant. It is just a matter of time since the weather is still cold so it takes time for it to over heat. If your headgasket is gone dun drive it, more damage maybe done.

Im gona do an oil change tonight. see wat transpires. But I didn't see any bubbling in the rad.

I checked mmy sparkplugs and they're white. antifreeze yeah?

no, white doesnt mean coolant. If they were steamed clean then i would say coolant. It doesnt sound to me like a headgasket, I would be happy to take a look at it for you no charge, pm me if interested.

I had the antifrereze filled to the top in the rad n water added to the resevoir bottle and fine. but after the last two days wen it was crazy hot the resevoir bottle was empty. maybe water evaporated?! lol

bro its nothing.
lol alot of times the resovoir bottle has some nasty gunk in the bottom of the bottle. its because it never gets cleaned and when people open it up they sometimes spill crap in it etc. so its not oil dont worry. as for the antifreeze disapearing on you you need to re-fill the antifreeze the proper way not put water in the resovoir and antifreeze into the radiator. thats wrong. flush the entire thing out and get a premixed antifreeze and pour it in until it completely fills the radiator then start the car and fill a little more and top it off. no need to put it in the resevoir. its meant for mostly when the antifreeze get super hot and needs to boil over to something. |
It seems to me its your head gasket. Everything your saying is what happened to me the past 3 months. Eventually it got so bad i did a swap. I got at least 8000kms. At 1st the temperature gauge was fine but the last 2000kms it kept overheating and i wasnt blowing white smoke but it smelled really sweet. Go check that out before you do anymore damage. I replaced my motor with a d15b 3-stage vtec and the km's im getting is crazy lol.

*UPDATE*
Well the oil is from the last motor, the d16. I got my headgasket checked and mechanic told me it was fine. It was a hose which was leaking because it wasn't put on properly. When the pressure test was done mechanic said there it leaked like crazy. Thanks for everyone's input. |

I am having the same issue, well, similar.
Condition of the car: no over heat, car runs good. Resevoir was low (like very) so I topped it off to minimum line. Then I saw oily stuff in it (not much) and I began to worry. However, last time I did my oil change, I filled the oil when the car was on my driveway, so the car was on an incline. Turned out I sorta "overfilled" it and it has been close to 5000kms and the oil level is still at the top dot. Thoughts? Thanks |
