it is your lower ball joints most likely. They are pressed into your steering knuckle. If you look at the bottom of the lower control arm immediately behind your brake rotor, you'll see a castle nut there - that's the ball joint. I had mine pressed out and pressed a new one back in. However I'm not sure if anyone sells them separately, I had an extra set from my original suspension.

as far as i know they are replaceable by themselves so they should be sold like that...i was told upper balljoints need whole new control arms which they do...lowers dont

shlammed 06-Jan-2004 09:27 AM

would new lower control arms come with new lower balljoints on them? is that what u mean?

bbarbulo 06-Jan-2004 09:49 AM

No, the lower control arms are not assembled with the lower ball joints - they bolt together (via the castle nut). The lower ball joint is pressed into the steering knuckle itself. I think they are replacable by themselves, BUT you have to have a machine shop press them in else you risk damaging them or putting them in crooked. If you are really careful and patient you could do it, but it's better to just remove the steering knuckle and take it to a machine shop like Carquest to have them press it in. You can just hammer out the old ones with a hammer since they are gone anyways. But before you do any of this, visually inspect where the play in your wheel is. Sometimes a tie rod end can make a similar noise. Jack the car up and shake the wheel around to see if there is play, then visually check to see where the play is at.

the lower control arm does not have the lower ball joint attached to it. the kunckle is where the lower ball joint exists. the lower control arm is just attached by the castle nut. the ball joint has to be pressed out of the Kunckle

any idea how much $$$ im looking at

shlammed 06-Jan-2004 09:56 AM

i just called sterling honda....$84.87 each wtf...gonna see how much i can get them for from parkway

bbarbulo 06-Jan-2004 10:21 AM

About $71 from Parkway I'm guessing.

But who cares, it's only $140 for a tight ass ride - that's worth it.

I gotta do both new OEM upper control arms cuz I sold my old ones to someone for dirt cheap :banghead: and now I need them. DOH!!!

shlammed 06-Jan-2004 10:24 AM

lol...i got control arms for $100 for both from some japanese auto place in toronto...brand new.

Yes, I know, but when I talked to Matt the other day after he had installed a set or coilovers, he told me the box said 88 and up.....So am I to assume the ST's for thr 5th gen, would also fit on the 4th gens too?

shlammed 06-Jan-2004 10:27 AM

i guess so

shlammed 06-Jan-2004 10:37 AM

the place I got my upper control arms from just quoted me $23ea for the lower balljoints lol

bbarbulo 06-Jan-2004 10:43 AM

I only put on OEM parts where there is no more performance to be had, I will not buy from some auto corner store. Even where OEM parts are unavailable I'll search out Moog chassis components (for other cars, all Civic parts are still available at the dealer).

PULOVR is correct, ALL 88-00 springs are interchangable. Not so much for shocks.

This is a good suggestion. However, I would argue that the ITR was designed with a neutral balance WITH the B-series in mind. The B-series is a significant weight penalty over the D-series. That would mean ITR springs on a 4th gen (very light AND D-series), the front spring rate of the ITR spring would be too high, and as a result would give shlammed some pretty bad understeer. This is undesirable for most 'enthusiasts'. The ITR spring would be perfect for someone with an 6th gen SiR or a B-swap in a 5th/6th gen who didn't want a slammed car.

well...i've been using the control arms i got from them for over 4 months now with no problems so i dont see why i should spend 4 times more to get oem parts.

bbarbulo 06-Jan-2004 10:52 AM

:shrugs: no reason other than tight tolerences and quality control

shlammed 06-Jan-2004 05:45 PM

well the cheaper ones feel fine
