Aftermarket head gaskets? What are the benefits other than the higher compression??
I know of Spoon and Mugen metal head gaskets, but I'd like to learn more about what they do specifically actually. I just know they're there but I don't actually know what their function is :p
can someone tell me please? :) Are there any other companies that make metal head gaskets? :) |
Honda OEM headgaskets are made from copper, and comprised of 3 layers.
Spoon and Mugen only have 2 layers. |
They raise your compression a bit. I've chosen to stick with OEM head gaskets though becuase 1) Turbo is possibly in the near future, and 2) you can't go wrong with Honda parts when it comes to reliability.
|
ok, but are there differences between a Type R head gasket and a normal B16 one?? :p
|
hmmm that's a good question. I would say no cuz they're both the same head castings, so it would only make sense that they use the same head gasket, but I'll see if I can find out for you. :)
|
coo coo..thanks man...
how much do OEM gaskets run for anywho :p |
B-series are about $100+tax ... honestly if you're pulling the head off for the 1st time, it's wise to invest in a complete head gasket set, which is about $300 or so. It'll save you headaches and money down the road.
|
I'm just curious...it's not like I'm own a B-series anyways :p need to learn more info ;)
what's a complete headgasket package?? |
The complete head gasket set comes with all various gaskets, seals and rings for your head. Things like head gasket, valve cover gasket, IM gasket, exhaust manifold gasket, injector o-rings, cam seals, valve seals, spark plug rings, etc. etc. etc. :D
|
since u guys are talking about engine upgrades.....
I'm just trying to decide if I should upgrade for my D16 or save for swap....? I'm thinking of getting cams first...but any suggestions are welcome :nods: |
of course get a new engine man! :) No doubt about it :p

Well no, these gaskets, rings, and seals wear over time, and you should replace them if you take your head apart just to be on the safe side. you don't want leaks and **** in your head right? It's a maintenance thing man. :)
|
I wish ..... but new engine = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$$$$$
|
what can I upgrade to increase my low end power?
|
Swap or supercharger. I'd pick swap.
Of course there's always NOS too. You could also rip your D motor apart and resleeve it to some crazy bore and go with high compression pistons and head work, but that'll cost you more than a swap. So yeah, just swap it. :) |
:( I'm just looking for a low budget way to increase the low end power....
|
but if I'm to choose... I'll go with a swap (B20 Vtec) or.... supercharge  .....that's if I had the cash
|
Rip your back seat out. [shrugs]
Seriously man, I suggest you save for a swap, cuz that's the only way your gonna get any real, reliable power. You could turbo or supercharge your current motor but i don't think that's worth it on a non-VTEC D16. |
yea, i've started to save up for my swap too. but it'll take me close to a year and a half to get the cash...
so till then, i get to baby my D16 non VTEC around :) also duy, from what i've seen, the diff b/w D16 non VTEC, D16 SOHC VTEC and B16A, is variable timing. how is it then, that in an engine size of about the same (1.6l), can there be such a big power diff ( 106, 127, 160)! or are they doing something else like raising compression? or smthing? what's the missing link??? |
