i've had a cold air intake on my car for 2 years now and never had a problem. I've even driven through some unavoidable standing water and driven in the winter. I'd say that by-pass isn't necessary and that its a waste of money.

maybe if you were driving during a flood or something it would help but not under normal circumstances

you know... you can make your own bypass system really easily!! take a valvecover breather, the bigger the better. Then take a fitting and drill a hole in your intake (somewhere close to the throttle body, away from any possible water) should the intake become clogged or should it get dunked into water, the valvecover breather fiter should allow the engine to suck in air through there instead, w/o being able to create enough vacuum to suck any water into the intake. During normal operation, the V/C breather should be restrictive enough to not interfere with normal operation of the cold air intake.

Lol , I kinda wish I have that , my passenger side inner fender skin is ripped up from my old 17's rubbing. Sometimes when I drive through some nasty puddles my intake will suck water in and its not even a cold air. One time it got so bad my CEL came on too. i'm guessing too much water = too much oxygen and gave it a lean air/fuel mixture which set off the light.
